Full Time Healthcare Integration Engineer information

What is a full time healthcare integration engineer?

Full Time Healthcare Integration Engineers are professionals who specialize in connecting and integrating various healthcare systems, such as electronic health records (EHR), medical devices, and third-party software. Their role is to ensure seamless data exchange and interoperability within healthcare organizations, improving efficiency and patient care. These engineers work full time and often use standards like HL7, FHIR, and DICOM to facilitate secure and reliable data integration. They may also troubleshoot technical issues, manage data migrations, and collaborate with clinical staff to understand workflow needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time healthcare integration engineer?

To thrive as a Full Time Healthcare Integration Engineer, you need strong knowledge of healthcare data standards (such as HL7 and FHIR), integration methodologies, and a background in computer science or a related field. Experience with integration engines (e.g., Mirth Connect), APIs, and familiarity with EHR/EMR systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications like HL7 or Epic certifications. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with clinical staff and IT teams. These skills ensure seamless and secure data exchange between disparate healthcare systems, which is critical for patient care and organizational efficiency.

What are the typical challenges faced by full time healthcare integration engineers when working with different healthcare systems?

Healthcare Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring interoperability between disparate electronic health record (EHR) systems, navigating complex data privacy regulations like HIPAA, and resolving data mapping inconsistencies. These professionals must also troubleshoot real-time data exchange issues and coordinate closely with both IT teams and clinical staff to ensure seamless integration. A strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills are key to overcoming these obstacles and delivering reliable, secure healthcare solutions.

What is the difference between Full Time Healthcare Integration Engineer vs Healthcare Software Developer?

AspectFull Time Healthcare Integration EngineerHealthcare Software Developer

Work EnvironmentHealthcare facilities, hospitals, health IT companiesSoftware development firms, health tech startups, healthcare IT departments
Employer & Industry UsageHealth systems, EHR vendors, healthcare providersHealth tech companies, software firms focusing on healthcare solutions

The Full Time Healthcare Integration Engineer focuses on connecting healthcare systems and ensuring interoperability, often working directly with EHRs and health data standards. Healthcare Software Developers primarily design and build healthcare applications and software solutions. While both roles require technical skills and healthcare knowledge, the Integration Engineer emphasizes system connectivity, whereas the Developer concentrates on software creation.

Location: Remote, U.S.-based
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract
Contract Duration: 12-week minimum, with potential extension
Start Timing: Early to mid-September 2026
Openings: Multiple openings

About the Opportunity

We are looking for experienced Senior Mirth Engineers to support a large-scale healthcare interface migration from a legacy integration engine to Mirth Connect / NextGen Connect.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role focused on complex HL7 interface conversion, technical decision-making, reusable framework development, testing support, and migration readiness. The right person will bring deep healthcare integration experience, strong Mirth Connect skills, and the ability to guide other engineers during a fast-moving platform migration.

This is a remote, U.S.-based contract opportunity expected to begin in early to mid-September 2026.

What You'll Do
  • Lead complex healthcare interface migration work from a legacy integration platform to Mirth Connect / NextGen Connect
  • Design, build, and validate Mirth Connect channels for HL7 interface workflows
  • Develop reusable transformation logic, shared frameworks, coding standards, and migration patterns
  • Review interface logic, mappings, routing rules, and transformation requirements
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for complex interface issues during migration, testing, and cutover
  • Provide guidance to conversion engineers working on assigned interface channels
  • Support cutover planning, migration readiness, testing coordination, and go-live activities
  • Troubleshoot interface discrepancies, message routing issues, transformation errors, and performance concerns
  • Support healthcare X12 EDI transaction interfaces where applicable
  • Work directly with client technical teams, delivery leads, QA resources, and integration stakeholders
  • Document interface specifications, mappings, migration decisions, technical risks, and resolution notes
  • Help ensure converted interfaces meet production-readiness expectations before cutover
What We're Looking For
  • 8 or more years of healthcare integration engineering experience
  • Hands-on production experience with Mirth Connect / NextGen Connect
  • Experience with Interfaceware Iguana strongly preferred
  • Strong HL7 v2.x messaging expertise, including ADT, ORU, ORM, SIU, and similar message types
  • JavaScript and/or Lua scripting proficiency
  • Experience supporting large-scale interface engine migrations, healthcare platform cutovers, or integration modernization projects
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex interface, mapping, transformation, and message flow issues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working directly with technical teams, delivery stakeholders, and client-side resources
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, fast-paced contract environment
Preferred Background
  • Experience with X12 EDI healthcare claims transactions, including 837, 835, 270, and 271
  • Familiarity with FHIR
  • Experience in revenue cycle management, claims processing, hospital systems, payer systems, or healthcare IT environments
  • Prior experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead on a consulting or contract engagement
Contract Details
  • Full-time contract role
  • Remote, U.S.-based
  • 12-week minimum engagement, with extension likely
  • Anticipated start in early to mid-September 2026
  • Multiple openings available
Why This Role Stands Out

This is a strong opportunity for a senior healthcare integration engineer who wants to play a key role in a high-volume interface migration. The role offers hands-on Mirth Connect work, technical leadership, complex HL7 conversion, cutover support, and the opportunity to guide migration standards across a critical healthcare integration project.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
