Job purpose
Under the direction of the mechanic and/or the assistant golf course superintendent, the assistant mechanic and/or works independently of the mechanic in the repairing and maintenance of various gasoline and diesel-powered golf course maintenance equipment. The assistant mechanic also assists in maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building, contributes to a preventative maintenance program, and places safety procedures as a top priority.
Duties and responsibilities
  • Communicates any needs or problems relating to maintenance or repair of equipment with the mechanic and/or assistant superintendent.
  • Inspects/diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various pieces of golf course maintenance equipment on a regular basis.
  • Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work.
  • Sets up and modifies new equipment as needed.
  • Repairs and adjusts engines and cutting mechanisms on various heavy and light mowing equipment.
  • Keeps maintenance equipment fueled, oiled, and inspected and performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications
Qualifications include:
  • Working knowledge of the general operation of gasoline, diesel and electric powered equipment; the proper methods of servicing golf course equipment; and the repair and adjustment of power mowing equipment
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession
  • Ability to move heavy objects
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction
  • Mechanical ability; ability to use common mechanical tools
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Maintenance of a clean and safe work environment
  • Assistance in maintaining a clean and well-organized parts inventory room
  • Adherence to the proper recycling and/or disposal of various oils, compounds, and other fluids (antifreeze, oil filters, etc.)
  • Assistance in an effective, daily inspection of golf course maintenance equipment
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, possibly a commercial driver's license (CDL)

Working conditions
Work is primarily outdoors. Potential exposure to sharp and rapid equipment movement, sharp utensils, harmful chemicals and/or being exposed to flying golf balls.

Physical requirements
Good organizational and verbal skills. Ability to use logical and rational thinking to resolve issues. Ability to perform basic mathematical skills, monitors and develops subordinates, visually monitor the operation areas, write and read member communication.
Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and may be required to lift up to 80 lbs., up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 20 lbs. constantly. Perform activities such as bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, standing, pushing, lifting and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting.
Please be advised that all work that requires the use of a ladder more than 8 ft. long must be reviewed by Hampton Golf's Club Maintenance person. Following his assessment of the situation, he will determine if he or subcontractors will perform the necessary maintenance task. No other staff member is authorized to climb to heights exceeding 8 ft. and or perform such maintenance. In addition, personnel are prohibited from entering facility attics, walking on the roof of buildings, and/or prohibited from using scaffolding.
Use the following safety precautions when using an 8ft. ladder:
  • Correct placement of the ladder. The safest angle for a straight ladder is to ensure it is placed on-fourth the distance from the base to the point of support. "A" frame ladders naturally comply.
  • Ensure the ladder is placed on a firm level surface, and do not place the ladder near a doorway.
  • Ensure there are non-skid shoes on the ladder.
  • If using a medal ladder, be sure that it is not near electrical wires.
  • One person on a ladder at one time, and ensure another staff member is holding the ladder in position.
  • Never overreach.
  • Ability to consistently lift, carry and load adaptive and other sports equipment that may weigh 50 or more pounds, and sustain aerobic activity for 20 consecutive minutes.
