Job description

Kleinschmidt has a full-time opening for a Senior Fisheries Engineering Consultant to lead fish passage projects and manage people, projects, and client relationships. Our flexibility and core value of relationships allows us to offer employees the opportunity to work in an office, or remotely, based on their personal needs, but the ideal candidate would be near our Portland, OR, Redmond, WA, Strasburg, PA, or Portland, ME offices. If you are interested in using your engineering background to work on unique projects that make a real difference, then this may be the job for you. An ideal candidate would enjoy the challenge of combining sound engineering fundamentals with creative thinking to solve problems related to fish passage.
Salary: $120,000 - $160,000
Bonus Target: 8%+
Who You Are
A licensed Professional Engineer with a BSCE or MS with a minimum of 16 years' experience in fisheries or a closely related field. Experience designing and managing fisheries projects (e.g., technical fishways, hatcheries, floating surface collectors, and/or downstream passage) is required, with a preferred specialty in structural, mechanical, hydraulics, or civil engineering. If you enjoy continuing to learn new things every day and are up for the challenge of one-of-a-kind projects without cookie cutter solutions, we would love to hear from you and explore how you could help our team continue to be a leader in the fisheries engineering field.
Knowledgeable: Knowledge of standards and codes applicable to fisheries engineering and related disciplines is required. The candidate should have experience working with clients, agencies, and contractors during planning and construction of projects. The candidate should have experience laying out and designing fishway projects as part of a multi-discipline (e.g., civil, structural, hydraulics, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical engineering) team. The ideal candidate would have the ability to work in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, and/or MEP, but this is not required. Familiarity with regulatory and permitting processes for fisheries engineering projects is a plus, as is construction experience, fish hatchery experience, nature-like fishway experience, and design drawing development.
Technical Leader: Experience leading a multi-discipline team to think outside the box, apply prior design experiences and guidelines, and meet our clients' objectives. No two fishways are identical, so the candidate should enjoy creative problem solving and finding effective solutions while establishing long-term relationships in the industry and with our clients. Project management and business development are not required but could become part of this role for the right candidate.
Relationship-Focused Team Player: Passion for mentoring junior-level staff and being part of a cohesive team. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team while applying engineering skills from analysis and design through to construction. Experience collaborating with regulators and biologists is a plus. Interest in establishing long-lasting relationships with clients to assist them in solving complex engineering challenges.
Additional Requirements
  • Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and able to acquire authorization to work in Canada when project needs dictate.
  • Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver's license (anticipate 0-10% travel).
  • Must possess and maintain a P.E. or be committed to getting licensed within a year (P.Eng is a bonus) and be able to add other state/provincial licenses as required. Kleinschmidt provides support for PDH and P.E. licenses.

About the Position
Typical duties of this position include leading multi-disciplinary teams of engineers and scientists in delivery of fish passage projects and potentially assisting in business development and client management activities. Tasks include performing and/or managing structural, civil, hydraulic, and mechanical design tasks in support of fisheries engineering projects across the USA and Canada. The successful candidate will join a team of technical professionals working on fisheries, hydropower, renewable energy, and ecological restoration projects in the U.S. and Canada.
The candidate will review analyses and designs to identify areas for improvement and omissions, providing feedback to others. They may also serve as an in-house expert, advising on multiple specialties and share their expertise with the firm through memos, staff meetings, lunch-time seminars, and mentoring. The successful candidate will be supported and mentored by our senior engineering advisors and principal engineers in the fields of fish passage, fish hatcheries, and related facilities design while incorporating the skills of structural, civil, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
