Qualifications and requirements: POSITION SUMMARY & PRIMARY DUTIES:
The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is an allied health professional competent in surgical procedures and an integral part of the surgical care team. The CSFA works under the supervision and delegation of a surgeon and alongside the circulating nurse and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), as well as other members of the surgical team, to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures.
The CSFA is an expert in theory and application of aseptic and sterile techniques, knowledgeable of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgeon preferences to properly assist the surgeon, providing visualization of the operative site using appropriate methods, participation, anticipation, and critical thinking. The CSFA assists with patient positioning, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
The CSFA utilizes appropriate techniques to manipulate tissues for retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation, insert foley catheters, apply tourniquets, achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis, inject local anesthetics, insert trocars, operate drills and saws, assist with body plane closures, splints, and casts, secure drainage systems, and apply wound dressings.

  • Completion of case carts
  • Proper communication with operating room staff
  • Operating room set up
  • Cleaning and care of operating rooms, core, and equipment
  • Supply outdates
  • Weekday, weekend, and holiday call coverage

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Education:
  • Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology through an accredited Surgical Technology program

Required Certification(s):
  • National Certification as a Surgical First Assistant through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • American Heart Association healthcare provider BLS, within one month of hire

Minimum Work Experience:
  • Preferred 1 Year CSFA acute care experience

Required Skills:
  • Verbal, written, and computer skills
  • Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Take appropriate action in a stressful environment
