Job description

Job Description: The Full-time Biology Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation and execution of classroom and laboratory experiences. Instructors develop, evaluate, and revise the curriculum incorporating evidence-based learning activities directed at meeting established learning outcomes. Instructors monitor and evaluate student performance based on established grading guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions:
  • Contributes to the overall achievement of the college's mission and goals through effective instruction and classroom management.
  • Plans and prepares for assigned courses.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy.
  • Develops instructional outcomes and appropriate evaluation and assessment methods of learning.
  • Creates and maintains an environment of rapport and respect.
  • Clearly establishes expectations for learning and achievement.
  • Maintains up-to-date, accurate records on attendance and student progress.
  • Engages in academic counseling and advisement.
  • Meets with current and prospective students for review and accurate interpretation of college placement scores.
  • Makes referrals to college resources available to provide services or assistance to students.
  • Engages in the college community for professional networking development.
  • Provides input into budgeting and decision-making processes.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in field of expertise basing current instructional practice on recent evidence.
  • Communicates learning expectations to students effectively.
  • Varies teaching techniques and incorporates current technology.
  • Structures classroom activities and assignments based on established learning outcomes.
  • Provides students with written and oral feedback.
  • Engages in self-assessment of teaching practices and professional development needs.
  • Keeps all classes, office hours at the required amount of time set forth by the College and maintains good classroom management.
  • Oversees the labs for courses that require lab time and sets up lab equipment for each class.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • Thorough knowledge in the field of expertise and teaching techniques.
  • Ability to develop daily lesson plans and design learning activities aimed at achieving student learning outcomes.
  • Communicate learning expectations through the provision of structured activities and assignments.
  • Ability to instruct, engage students, and assess student learning.
  • Familiarity with college resources available to provide instruction and services or assistance to students including instructional technology.
  • Ability to provide guidance to students for academic planning.
  • Knowledge of placement policies when interpreting placement scores and advising students.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in the subject area.
  • Candidates should demonstrate the ability to successfully maintain a teaching load.
  • Two years' experience teaching students in higher education.
  • The successful candidate will possess competence and experience to develop, revise, implement and assess the curriculum to ensure that students are acquiring current knowledge, including familiarity with technology used in classroom settings.
  • A shared vision for preparing students for their professional programs and an ability and willingness to use novel teaching techniques and technology to engage today's learner is essential.
  • Candidates for this position must possess a thorough knowledge of the teaching field, a commitment to high academic standards, a dedication to student success, and excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Full-time work experience teaching at the college level.
• Experience using a learning management system such as Canvas
• Credentials appropriate to teach in a second discipline taught at SEARK College
