Full Time Behavior Detection Officer information

What is a full time behavior detection officer?

Full Time Behavior Detection Officers (BDOs) are security professionals, often employed by agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), whose primary role is to observe and analyze the behaviors of individuals in airports and other transport hubs to identify potentially suspicious or high-risk activities. They are trained to spot behavioral indicators that may suggest stress, fear, or deception, which could be linked to security threats. BDOs interact with travelers, conduct non-intrusive interviews, and work closely with law enforcement if needed. Their goal is to enhance public safety by proactively identifying risks before they escalate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time behavior detection officer?

To thrive as a Full Time Behavior Detection Officer, you need a strong background in observation, behavioral analysis, and security procedures, usually supported by a high school diploma and relevant security or law enforcement experience. Familiarity with surveillance systems, incident reporting tools, and possibly specialized TSA or security certifications is typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, situational awareness, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for recognizing and responding to suspicious behavior. These skills are essential to proactively identify potential threats and maintain safety in high-risk environments such as airports or public venues.

What are some common challenges faced by full time behavior detection officers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Full Time Behavior Detection Officers often face challenges such as accurately assessing behaviors in high-traffic environments and managing the stress of making quick decisions that impact security. To address these challenges, officers typically undergo extensive training in behavioral analysis and situational awareness, and they work closely with team members and supervisors to debrief on incidents and share observations. Collaboration and clear communication with other security personnel and law enforcement are essential for effective threat assessment and maintaining a safe environment. Continuous on-the-job learning and participation in regular training sessions help officers stay current with best practices and improve their skills.

Job description

Be Part of an Amazing Story.
Macy's is more than just a store. We're a story. One that's captured the hearts and minds of America for more than 160 years. A story about innovations and traditions...about inspiring stores and irresistible products...about the excitement of the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, and the wonder of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We've been part of memorable moments and milestones for countless customers and colleagues. Those stories are part of what makes this such a special place to work.
Job Overview
As an Asset Protection Officer, you are a visible and welcoming presence who helps create a safe, secure, and service-focused shopping environment. Stationed at key entrances and high-shortage areas, you help deter theft, identify potential risk, support customer and colleague safety, and partner with store teams to deliver a positive experience for everyone who enters the store.
Why This Role Matters
This entry-level role is more than traditional security - it is presence with purpose. Whether greeting customers, helping deter theft, supporting team safety, or responding calmly during incidents, Asset Protection Officers help customers and colleagues feel comfortable, confident, and cared for while protecting the business.
How Our Asset Protection Colleagues Spend Their Day...
  • Our colleagues begin each day energized and ready to make an impact. They greet teammates with a warm hello. Before they get started, they review updates and department information so they're fully informed and ready to engage with confidence.
  • On the floor, they focus on the customer - offering a warm welcome, making eye contact, and creating friendly customer experience.
  • We believe service starts with each other - supporting one another with honesty, care, and collaboration so we can better serve our customers and communities.
  • And we know that excellence is a journey - we strive to improve every day, take pride in our work, achieve sales goals and learn from each other to deliver individual and store results.

What To Expect
  • Serve as a visible and reassuring presence at store entrances, high-traffic areas, and high-shortage locations.
  • Help deter theft and identify suspicious activity while maintaining a welcoming, customer-first approach.
  • Partner with store teams and Asset Protection leaders to support safety, service, and shortage reduction.
  • Respond calmly and professionally to incidents, medical situations, and other store needs.
  • Use technology and two-way communication devices to stay connected and support timely response.

How You'll Make an Impact
  • Create a safe and welcoming first impression by greeting customers and maintaining a visible presence in key areas of the store.
  • Help protect company assets by deterring theft, identifying suspicious behavior, and supporting shortage reduction efforts.
  • Assist with apprehensions under the direction of Asset Protection Leaders, Captains, or Detectives.
  • Document theft, accidents, audits, and other incidents through accurate and timely reporting.
  • Conduct operational audits and complete assigned Asset Protection tasks as directed.
  • Support a culture of safety and service by partnering with store teams and responding appropriately to customer and colleague needs.
  • Follow company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, evidence handling, and confidential information.
  • Respond to medical situations and help facilitate basic first aid for customers and colleagues.
  • Provide testimony in criminal or civil legal proceedings, as needed.

Skills That Matter
Must Have
  • Flexible availability, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Ability to read and understand employment policies, safety rules, and procedures in English.
  • Strong situational awareness and the ability to remain calm, professional, and service-focused during incidents.
  • Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
  • For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.
  • Comfort using technology and two-way communication devices.

Nice to Have
  • Experience in retail, customer service, security, safety, or asset protection.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with colleagues across levels and departments.
  • Prior experience supporting audits, incident documentation, or shortage reduction efforts.

Physical Activities You Will Perform
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing/walking around store or department.
  • May occasionally involve reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Must be able to apprehend shoplifters.
  • Ability to sustain long periods of time enclosed in surveillance areas.
  • Frequently lift/move up to 30lbs.
  • Requires close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
