The Opportunity:

As the Assistant Manager, you report to the Beef Operations Manager and are expected to serve as Manager in the absence of the Beef Operations Manager. You have sole responsibility for specific program operations, including animal nutrition, leading and developing educational programs, and developing and implementing safety programs. You are responsible for planning, timing, and directing personnel resources and facilities for major beef herd and feedlot events such as calving, breeding, nutrition and feeding, health care, forage utilization, pasture grazing schedules, and livestock sales, as well as meeting the needs of the Washington State University (WSU) Meats Laboratory, WSU Premium Beef, and WSU Premium Wagyu Beef programs. In collaboration with the Beef Operations Manager, you coordinate resources, time, facilities, communication, and organizational needs to support the simultaneous use of facilities for research, extension, and instructional activities. You teach classes as assigned by the departmental chair and play a critical role in implementing the Beef Center and Cattle Feeding Lab animal care and nutrient management plans. You also serve as an important representative of the Department of Animal Sciences and Washington State University to the beef industry. This position typically works Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the flexibility to work weekends as needed to support animal care, teaching, research, and extension activities.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time (100% FTE), permanent position. Overtime eligibility will be determined based on final salary placement.


Monthly Salary: $4,508.70 - $6,763.06 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and two (2) years of progressively responsible relevant experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Practical knowledge and experience with the beef industry; experience in beef cattle management, and knowledge of pasture management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Animal Sciences or related field.

  • Experience in teaching or outreach.

  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.

  • Minimum of 1 year teaching experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with budgeting and economic forecasting.

  • Artificial Insemination experience.

  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) experience.

The Department of Animal Sciences at WSU offers the only four-year Animal Sciences degree in Washington state.
