What does a full time baker do?

A full time baker is responsible for preparing and baking a variety of breads, pastries, cakes, and other baked goods, typically in a bakery, restaurant, or commercial kitchen setting. Their daily tasks include measuring and mixing ingredients, monitoring baking times and temperatures, and ensuring the quality and consistency of products. Bakers also maintain a clean and organized work environment and may contribute to developing new recipes or products. They often start work early in the morning to ensure fresh products are available for customers throughout the day. Attention to detail and time management are key skills for a successful baker.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time baker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Baker, you need expertise in baking techniques, ingredient measurements, and food safety, often supported by a culinary arts degree or relevant bakery experience. Familiarity with commercial baking equipment, ovens, mixers, and inventory management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, creativity, and strong teamwork skills help bakers produce high-quality products and maintain a productive kitchen environment. Mastering these skills ensures consistent product quality, efficient operations, and customer satisfaction in a fast-paced bakery setting.

What are some common challenges full time bakers face during a typical shift, and how can they be managed?

Full-time bakers often encounter challenges such as managing early morning hours, maintaining consistent product quality under time constraints, and handling high-volume production during peak periods. Effective time management, strong organizational skills, and close collaboration with team members are essential for overcoming these hurdles. Additionally, bakers frequently rotate between tasks such as mixing doughs, monitoring ovens, and decorating baked goods, so adaptability and good communication play a key role in ensuring a smooth workflow.

Job description

FULL-TIME BAKER — Charlotte's Bakery

Charlotte's Bakery, Dubuque, IA

About Us

Charlotte's Bakery is part of the Charlotte's family — the same folks behind Charlotte's Coffee House. We're not just here to bake; we're here to be the living room of the community, a place where people come to recharge, reconnect, and recenter over something delicious. If you take pride in your craft and love making people's day a little better, we want to meet you.

Position: Full-Time Baker

We're looking for a dedicated, full-time baker to join our team. This role is hands-on from open to close — mixing, proofing, baking, and finishing our daily lineup of breads, pastries, and treats, while holding the line on quality and consistency every single time.

What You'll Do

- Prepare and bake breads, pastries, and other baked goods according to recipes and quality standards

- Manage proofing, baking, and cooling schedules to keep product flowing all day

- Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe kitchen

- Monitor inventory and flag ingredient needs before they become a problem

- Ensure every item that leaves the kitchen meets our presentation and quality bar — remake it if it doesn't

- Work closely with front-of-house staff to keep the case stocked and coordinate order timing

- Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines

What We're Looking For

- Previous baking or pastry experience preferred, but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn matter more

- Comfortable on your feet in a fast-paced kitchen environment

- Available for early morning shifts and weekend rotation

- Someone who takes ownership of their work and doesn't need to be told twice

- A team player who communicates clearly and treats coworkers with respect

- Food Handler certification (or willingness to obtain one upon hire)

Schedule & Pay

- Full-time, 30–40 hours per week

- Starting wage: $14–$16/hour, based on experience

Perks

- One free drink for every 4 hours worked

- 30% employee discount on food, drinks, and apparel

- Gym membership reimbursement after 90 days

- A genuinely tight-knit team that has each other's backs
