Job description

Description:

This position is located in Wilmington, Delaware. Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Wilmington is seeking a Backhoe Operator who will be responsible to coordinate and perform the activities related to the efficient and safe excavation of graves. In addition, the Backhoe Operator is responsible for planning and directing the best route into an excavation area and will guide the assigned truck driver into this area. The Backhoe Operator acts as a team leader in all excavation and interment set up operations.


The schedule for this full-time position is Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, but may occasionally require days or times outside the normal work schedule.


Essential Functions:

  • Properly designate the proper location of an interment or foundation for a memorial, utilizing the required maps, charts, lot diagrams and related forms.
  • Notice discrepancies between field conditions and records and report these discrepancies to supervision.
  • Record memorial inscriptions as requested.
  • Double check all work for accuracy.
  • Supervise, coordinate and perform activities related to the efficient and safe excavation of graves using a backhoe.
  • Safely operate and perform routine maintenance on assigned backhoe and trucks.
  • Safely operate and perform routine maintenance on any equipment as necessary.
  • Safely operate snow plows during snow storms.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in general heavy machinery operation; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record, with a respect and understanding of the safe and effective operation of the equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand charts, graphs and forms.
  • Ability to understand and enforce safety regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of surveying skills.
  • Familiarity with proper operations, routine maintenance and capabilities of cemetery equipment.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with individuals from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness to consent to a satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
