Job description

Good Food Journalism Fellow

Who Are We

We are a global community that is driven by the creative spirit of Los Angeles. Through an inspiring mix of music, news, and culture, we bring joy and connection – online, in-person and on the radio. Always excellent, accessible, and often unexpected, we are a constant source of fuel for the imagination, education and good vibes. At least, that is what our members tell us.

As NPR’s flagship member station in Southern California for more than 30 years and a community service of Santa Monica College, KCRW is the next generation of public media.

How You’ll Make An Impact

KCRW’s Good Food seeks to foster future food writers, curators and creators through a thirteen-month fellowship. The program will facilitate an exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences through original, bold reporting and audience engagement.

An important outcome for the program is to provide our audiences with thoughtful coverage that is more than recipes and restaurant reviews – we use food as a lens to explore culture, science, economics, history, and community. The Fellow will be empowered to incorporate their interests, experiences and perspectives into their project. Creative work may include innovators and entrepreneurs within the food space, coverage of the diverse communities that shape the Southern California food scene, agricultural sustainability and farming, food politics and policy and broader food culture.

The Good Food Fellow will report to the Senior Director of Good Food. The fellowship is designed as a full-time program over a duration of thirteen months. Professional development and mentoring in audio production, storytelling, digital content creation and journalism with hands-on experience will be cornerstones of the fellowship, as the Fellow works with KCRW’s award-winning news and culture team.

Here’s What You'll Do:

  • Explore the intersections of history, culture, and our environment by inviting diverse audiences to reconsider what they eat, where they eat, and why it matters

  • Develop, plan, and execute reporting projects that build on each other over the course of the fellowship

  • Produce original audio segments, social content, newsletter essays and other digital content for Good Food

  • Work with KCRW producers and editors to develop skills in pitching, sourcing, writing, audio production, social media and digital engagement

  • Independent field reporting and production

  • Uphold KCRW’s high standards for ethics and quality

Here’s What You'll Bring:

  • A cover letter introducing yourself, as well as your passion for food and journalism

  • 2+ years of journalism experience (including student publications, internships and fellowships)

  • Fluency in digital journalism and social media platforms

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • High-quality writing skills

  • A college degree or equivalent work experience

Preferred Skill:

  • Audio production and desktop editing in ProTools or similar software

  • Basic experience with content management systems or digital publishing tools

  • Interest in social media and audience engagement strategies

  • Ability to report in English and Spanish

  • Experience reporting or hosting on radio/podcasts

  • Ability to work independently

What We Offer:

  • Salary: $28.85/hr

  • Eligible for overtime and premium working holiday pay rate

  • Sick leave

  • Passionate office environment surrounded by an incredible community of curious and talented colleagues

  • KCRW is a qualifying employer under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program - read more here to determine your eligibility
