What does a full time AI agent developer do?

A Full Time AI Agent Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining artificial intelligence systems known as 'agents' that can perform tasks autonomously or assist humans in decision-making. This role involves programming, working with machine learning models, and integrating AI agents into software applications. Developers often collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and stakeholders to ensure the AI agents meet user needs and function reliably in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time AI agent developer?

To thrive as a Full Time AI Agent Developer, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python), a solid understanding of machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and tools such as Git, as well as experience with APIs and cloud platforms, are commonly required. Creative problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are valuable soft skills that set top candidates apart. These skills ensure the effective design, implementation, and continuous improvement of intelligent agents in a dynamic and evolving technology landscape.

What are some typical challenges full time AI agent developers face when deploying AI agents into production environments?

Full Time AI Agent Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring the reliability and scalability of AI agents when moving from development to production. Integrating agents with existing systems, handling real-world data variability, and maintaining performance under changing workloads are common hurdles. Job description

About the Role

This is a founding engineering role at a fast-moving healthtech startup building AI-powered patient recruitment infrastructure for clinical trials across North America. You'll work directly at the core of the platform — shaping architecture, shipping product, and driving the technical direction of a small, high-caliber team where your impact will be immediate and tangible.

What You'll Do
  • Orchestrate a fleet of AI agents coordinating patient recruitment workflows across hundreds of clinical trials.

  • Scale LLMs across voice, SMS, and email channels while maintaining consistent, personalized conversations throughout.

  • Build integrations into customer systems, including custom integrations for specific software versions and configurations.

  • Tune AI agent conversations and develop workflows for indication-specific screening logic and calculations.

  • Develop call center management tooling and optimal scheduling algorithms for recruiters and clinical research coordinators.

  • Reverse-engineer legacy healthcare systems that lack public APIs to integrate with existing clinical site tooling.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of full-stack or AI/ML engineering experience, with at least 3 years shipping user-facing products in production.

  • Full-stack development capabilities across frontend and backend — proficiency in Python, TypeScript, and JavaScript required.

  • Experience with the broader stack: Next.js, PostgreSQL, AWS, Terraform, and Docker a plus.

  • Strong CS fundamentals and demonstrated ability to make sound architectural decisions independently.

  • Background at a top-tier tech company, high-growth VC-backed startup, or quantitative trading firm preferred.

  • Strong academic foundations in CS, EECS, or Mathematics, with evidence of high performance (TA experience, notable side projects, or internships at well-regarded organizations).

  • Experience building applied LLM or agentic AI products.

  • Comfort operating in early-stage, ambiguous environments with self-directed work.

  • Healthcare or life sciences domain knowledge is a meaningful plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary range: $170,000 – $250,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is available.
