Job description

Standard Job Description
We are seeking a Design Engineer to help create and maintain immersive 3D simulated experiences for Lockheed Martin. The ideal candidate is a self-driven, creative, and design-oriented individual with a cinematic eye looking to contribute towards the creative process and design of quality experiences.
As part of the Innovation Demonstration Center (IDC) team you will work with a multidisciplined team to demonstrate, operate, and continually upgrade flight, land, and sustainment training demonstration systems. In the IDC's fast-paced environment you will draw on your education and experiences to solve unique and sometimes complex problems in showcasing our TLS products and IRADs to customers and stakeholders. This role will be responsible for updating and polishing the visuals of our demonstration systems to ensure we are showcasing high-quality, realistic scenes in both real-time environments and pre-rendered applications. The ideal candidate will have experience in 2D / 3D Tools (3D Studio Max, Photoshop, Substance, etc.) as well as real time render engines (Unreal Engine, Unity, etc.). This person will take source CAD data and work textured 3D assets that are production ready and optimize them for maximum performance in Virtual Reality. Ability to use engine profiling to optimize models, textures, and lighting for performance is a must. The ideal candidate will also have a strong understanding of 2D graphic design concepts; from user interface creation to in-house ads and banners. Excellent communication and collaborative skills are required; the candidate will work closely with programmers to implement art assets efficiently and allow for rapid iteration of application design and aesthetics. The successful candidate for this position is a knowledgeable, experienced professional that is capable of shaping design architectures and working within a creative team for real-time graphics applications that utilize 2D and 3D models, animations, and visual effects based on customer requirements.
Position responsibilities to be independently performed under general direction to complete objectives associated with specific project milestones and IDC strategy & objectives.
Roles and responsibilities will include:
  • Partnering with IDC development team and internal clients to shape project requirements through industry research, stakeholder interviews and emerging trends
  • Supporting the preparation of concepts, demonstrations, visual effects, and storyboards
  • Creation of high-quality, realistic hardware, environments, models, and textured 3D assets that are production ready and optimized to maximize performance for use in real time engine
  • Import 3D assets into game engine to create animations and ability to address issues with model that effect performance in engine (Unity, Unreal)
  • Set up and optimize lighting and reflections in game engine
  • Optimize project in gaming engine to meet the performance requirements of large aspect ratio displays, mobile, desktop, and AR/VR hardware
  • Continually exploring and integrating emerging visual presentation technology

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Computer Science, Digital Media, Game Development or similiar engineer studies
  • Experience using development tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or comparable application
  • Proficient in tools for 3D Model and texture creation (3DSMax, Maya, Photoshop, Premiere)
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of digital media, and application development
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment with multiple deadlines
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies
  • Ability / Willingness to travel (<= 10%)

Desired Skills
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Substance, etc.)
  • Familiar with CAD data and conversion to create optimized polygon meshes
  • An understanding of Physically-Based Rendering (PBR) textures and shaders.
  • Experience with VR, AR, or simulation systems.
  • Experience optimizing real-time applications
  • Experience creating realistic environments with lighting, textures, and 3D assets
  • Comfortable with public speaking and presenting to executives and stakeholders

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $70500.00 - $130900.00

  • For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
