What is a full stack web developer?

Full Stack Web Developers are professionals who have the skills to work on both the front-end and back-end of web applications. They design and build user interfaces, as well as develop server-side logic and manage databases. Full Stack Web Developers are proficient with a variety of programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle the complete development process from start to finish. Their broad skill set enables them to collaborate across different project stages and ensure seamless integration between client and server systems.

What does a full stack web developer do?

Full stack web developers develop the front end and back end of web applications. Your job duties include building web projects from scratch, testing and debugging software, and maintaining and improving existing web applications. Your frontend work includes creating an intuitive user interface, while your backend work involves server-side processes and database systems. As a web developer, you work with a team of other developers to evaluate each otherโ€™s work, ensuring that errors are caught and processes are smooth before going live in applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (such as Node.js, Python, or Java) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, or Django), version control systems (Git), and database management (SQL or NoSQL) is typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently building scalable, user-friendly applications and collaborating with diverse teams.

What are some common challenges full stack web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Web Developers often collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and other specialists, which can lead to challenges in aligning technical feasibility with business goals and user experience expectations. Communication gaps may arise when translating requirements into scalable solutions or when integrating front-end and back-end components. Staying updated with evolving technologies while managing multiple project priorities is also a common challenge. Effective collaboration, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful project delivery.

Job description

We build customer-facing command and control software for high-altitude balloon systems. Our users are trained operatorsโ€”primarily U.S. military and internal flight operations teamsโ€”who rely on our tools to make real-world decisions. Aerostar, a business unit of TCOM, is seeking aย Senior Software Engineerย to help design and build production-grade single-page applications and the services that power them.ย

This role focuses on delivering high-quality, maintainable software across the full stack. You will contribute to the design and implementation of complex web applications that integrate real-time telemetry, operational data, and mission workflows. While you will have opportunities to influence technical decisions, your primary focus will be building robust systems and contributing to a strong engineering culture.ย

You will work across frontend and backend systems, partnering with other engineers to deliver scalable, reliable solutions and continuously improve the quality of the codebase.ย

ย Relocation may be available.

What Youโ€™ll Do:ย ย

  • Design and implement key components of complex, data-driven single-page applicationsย ย
  • Build backend services, APIs, and data flows that support real-time telemetry and operational workflowsย ย
  • Contribute to technical design discussions for full-stack featuresย ย
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code across the stackย ย
  • Identify and address performance, reliability, and maintainability issuesย ย
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peersย ย
  • Collaborateย with cross-functional teammates to deliver high-quality softwareย

What Weโ€™re Looking For:ย ย

You are an experienced engineer who can independently deliver complex features and systems.ย ย

You have contributed to the design and implementation of production software and understand the tradeoffs behind engineering decisions.ย ย

You enjoy solving challenging technical problems and collaborating with other engineers to build better systems.ย ย

You are pragmatic, detail-oriented, and focused on delivering working software that meetsย userย needs.ย ย

You can write software without the assistance of AI but are open to using it to enhance your toolset.ย

Education & Experience:ย ย

  • Experienced engineer with 5+ yearsย of career experience, with bachelorโ€™s degree in software engineeringย or 3+ yearsโ€™ experience with
masterโ€™s degree. Or experience in lieu of education.

Preferred Experience:ย ย

  • Python familiarityย ย
  • TypeScriptย ย
  • Complex data visualizationย ย
  • Contributing to design systemsย ย
  • Working on operational or decision-support toolsย ย

How We Work:ย ย

We are not a startup, but we operate with ownership and technical rigor.ย ย

We are building serious aerospace systems, and we expect strong engineering discipline.ย ย

Strong preference for onsite collaboration. Hybrid may be considered. Remote candidates will not be prioritized.ย

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:ย ย

  • Physical Requirements:ย Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach. Reasonableย accommodationsย may be provided for individuals with disabilities.ย ย
  • Working Conditions:ย Primarily in a standard office environment, with occasional exposure to production areas, including noise, fumes, moving machinery, and varying temperatures.ย ย

Benefits:ย ย

TCOM offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts/HSAs, EAP, tuition reimbursement, parental leave, paid time off (PTO), and company-paid holidays. Programs and eligibility may vary based on hire date, classification, and schedule.ย
