What Is a Full Stack Software Engineer?

A full stack software engineer develops all aspects of a software application, from the user interface to the back-end database. As a full stack software engineer, your job duties include gathering customer requirements, writing the code to develop the application, and troubleshooting the application for any issues. The qualifications to pursue a career as a full stack software engineer include an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field and proficiency in a variety of coding languages and frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often involved in full project lifecycle.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full-stack development teams, startups, and projects requiring versatile developers.Found in teams emphasizing UI/UX, web design, and front-end frameworks.

While both roles require strong JavaScript skills, Full Stack Software Engineers handle both front-end and back-end development, whereas Front End Developers focus solely on the user interface and experience. The choice depends on whether you prefer a broader development scope or specialization in UI design.

What are Full Stack Software Engineers?

Full Stack Software Engineers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the user interface (client-side) as well as the server logic, databases, and application architecture (server-side). This means they can work on projects from start to finish, handling everything from user experience to data management. Full Stack Software Engineers often use a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them versatile and valuable members of a development team.

How do Full Stack Software Engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

This role tackles the challenge of maintaining high-availability storage and virtualization infrastructure within a mission-critical spacecraft operations environment. The Senior Engineer ensures seamless data flow and storage reliability, preventing downtime that could jeopardize active missions. By automating complex workflows and upgrading legacy hardware, this position bridges the gap between traditional data center management and modern, scalable infrastructure-as-code architectures.

What Success Looks Like (Objectives)
  • Maintain 99.9% uptime for mission-critical production data center storage and virtualization systems through proactive fault management and resolution

  • Accelerate deployment cycles by developing infrastructure automation and configuration management scripts, shifting the team toward a "storage-as-code" model

  • Optimize performance and security by leading end-to-end software and hardware upgrades for Dell, Pure, and Cisco MDS infrastructure

  • Design storage requirements in collaboration with Spacecraft Engineering teams to ensure data accessibility and integrity for satellite operations

  • Leverage AI-driven predictive analytics and storage monitoring tools to identify capacity trends and potential hardware failures before they impact production

  • Drive the adoption of DevOps and SRE principles within the storage stack to streamline CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure resilience

  • Collaborate with primary systems and network engineers to develop the expertise required to serve as a backup administrator for essential systems.

  • Identify and resolve fundamental software, network, and RF problems, utilizing escalation protocols when appropriate

  • Contribute to talent development by participating in hiring and onboarding, and providing occasional mentorship and task guidance to interns or junior engineers

  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Advanced proficiency in designing and maintaining high-performance Cisco MDS fiber channel storage networks and fabric zoning

  • Mastery of VMware environments and the intricate orchestration of storage resources within virtualized clusters

  • Strong software development skills in Python or Go, including the ability to apply AI-assisted coding tools for infrastructure automation and efficiency

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Linux and Windows Server administration within an Active Directory environment

  • Proven ability to lead complex technical projects simultaneously while adapting to the fast-paced requirements of spacecraft operations

Additional Qualifications
  • Advanced experience administering Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) Namespaces and Replication in an enterprise setting

  • Familiarity with configuration management tools such as SALT, Chef, Puppet, or Ansible

  • Foundational understanding of GitOps, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native architecture

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline (Computer Science, Engineering, or related field)

  • Minimum Experience: 5+ years of experience in systems engineering or storage administration

  • Required Technical Skills: Must have at least 2 years of experience with:

    • Dell Unity, PowerStore, or Pure Flash storage arrays

    • Fibre Channel or iSCSI storage fabrics and switches (Cisco MDS preferred).

    • VMware Virtualization environments

    • Software development using Python, GoLang, or Java

  • Legal Requirement: Must be a U.S. Person (a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident) as position requires access to U.S. export-restricted materials. Design storage requirements in collaboration with Spacecraft Engineering and Operations teams to ensure data accessibility and integrity for satellite operations

  • Availability: Must be able to participate in 24/7 on-call duties
