What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is a Full Stack Engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

While both roles require strong web development skills, a Full Stack Engineer handles both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web development. A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

Job description

Full Stack Engineer - Defense Sustainment

Location: Northern Virginia or Huntsville, AL

Work Environment: Hybrid

Role Summary:

Exiger is seeking a Full Stack Engineer (Cleared) to build and scale a highly strategic, federally aligned supply chain resilience initiative. This individual will operate across both front-end and back-end systems, delivering end-to-end functionality within a live control-tower environment. You will be responsible for connecting data pipelines, APIs, and user interfaces into a cohesive platform that enables real-time decision-making for operators, analysts, and senior stakeholders. This is a mission-critical role requiring strong engineering fundamentals, adaptability, and the ability to deliver measurable outcomes under compressed timelines.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, build, and maintain full stack applications that power the control-tower environment
  • Develop and integrate APIs, backend services, and front-end components into unified workflows
  • Build data-driven interfaces and dashboards that support real-time operational decision-making
  • Partner with Platform Engineers, Solution Architects, and Forward Deployed Engineers to translate mission requirements into scalable technical solutions
  • Contribute to data ingestion and pipeline workflows to ensure seamless flow of information across the platform
  • Ensure performance, scalability, and reliability across both front-end and back-end systems
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards across the stack, including code quality, testing, and deployment practices
  • Support rapid iteration cycles to evolve product capabilities in alignment with operational needs

What You Need:

  • Strong experience building full stack applications in modern environments
  • Strong experience designing and managing SQL databases
  • Proficiency in front-end technologies (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue) and back-end languages (e.g., C++, Java, or Go)
  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful , RPC and/or GQL APIs and working with distributed systems
  • Familiarity with data pipelines, ETLs, and data-intensive applications
  • Familiarity with designing and building secure applications in cloud environments
  • Experience working in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Strong understanding of system design, performance optimization, and scalability
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, mission-critical environments
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with an active Top Secret security clearance and eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)

Professional Experience Required:

  • 4-10 years of experience in software engineering or full stack development
  • Experience supporting federal, defense, or highly regulated environments is strongly preferred
  • Background in data platforms, analytics systems, or AI-enabled applications is a plus
  • Experience working in high-growth or mission-driven organizations

Why Exiger:

Exiger is transforming how governments understand and manage supply chain and software risk. This role offers a rare opportunity to:

  • Build end-to-end systems that enable real-time, mission-critical decision-making
  • Work directly with cross-functional teams solving complex national-level challenges
  • Contribute to a platform that integrates data, analytics, and operational workflows at scale
  • Operate at the intersection of technology, data, and mission execution in a high-impact environment

Why You'll Love Working at Exiger:

  • High-performance culture rooted in accountability, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence.
  • Discretionary Time Off for all employees, with no maximum limits on time off
  • Industry leading health, vision, and dental benefits
  • Competitive compensation package
  • 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave
  • Flexible, hybrid approach to working from home and in the office where applicable
  • Focus on wellness and employee health through stipends and dedicated wellness programming
  • Purposeful career development programs with reimbursement provided for educational certifications
