What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Science or related fields
Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

About Quindar
Quindar builds modern software for satellite operations, helping teams operate spacecraft with greater speed, clarity, and reliability. We work at the intersection of aerospace, software, and operations, supporting customers who need dependable tools for complex, real-world missions.
About the Role
Quindar is hiring a Full Stack Engineer to develop ground satellite operations software using Python, AWS, and modern web technologies. In this role, you will support mission-unique software development for U.S. government programs, working across backend and frontend systems while also contributing to Quindar's core product.
You do not need to be a satellite expert to succeed here. We are looking for a strong software engineer who is excited to build reliable, scalable systems in a mission-driven environment.
This is a hybrid role based in Arvada, CO.
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain backend services, APIs, and cloud-native applications for satellite operations workflows.
  • Develop mission-specific software for U.S. government customers while contributing to Quindar's core product platform.
  • Design, integrate, and troubleshoot services using AWS technologies such as EC2, S3, RDS, Fargate, EKS, CloudWatch, S3, EFS/EBS, EC2, and RDS.
  • Work across backend and frontend systems, including integration with React, TypeScript, GraphQL, and modern application frameworks.
  • Improve the scalability, security, cost efficiency, reliability, and performance of software used in satellite operations.
  • Build and support containerized and serverless architectures using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with satellite operators, customers, product managers, frontend engineers, backend engineers, and other cross-functional partners to understand requirements and deliver new capabilities.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, analyze system behavior, and improve maintainability, resilience, and observability over time.
  • Automate development, deployment, and operational workflows to help teams move quickly and reliably.

What We're Looking For
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in backend development, full-stack engineering, DevOps, or a related software engineering role.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong proficiency with Python and experience building production backend services.
  • Experience designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting APIs, distributed systems, relational and NoSQL databases, caching systems, event-driven systems, and multi-tier architectures.
  • Experience with AWS services and cloud-native development patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, containerized applications, and Kubernetes systems.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or similar.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript or TypeScript, with experience either developing full-stack or frontend software or closely integrating with frontend engineers.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git, GitHub, GitLab, or similar tools.
  • Strong technical analysis, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage projects with minimal guidance, and deliver high-quality work on time.
  • High standards for software maintainability, quality, resilience, security, and performance.
  • Strong communication skills across engineering, product, customer, and operations stakeholders.

Nice to Have
  • Experience building React components in TypeScript.
  • Experience with frameworks such as Next.js, Refine, or Vite.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and AWS services such as EKS, ECS, CloudWatch, S3, EFS/EBS, EC2, and RDS.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines, especially with GitHub Actions.
  • Experience working on satellite operations, aerospace, defense, or government software systems.
  • Demonstrated self-starting technical ownership, including building or deeply improving a product outside of a traditional professional role.

Why You'll Love Working at Quindar
  • We work in a cutting edge industry and you will get the opportunity to be part of a small team with a large direct impact on the success of our customers' space missions!
  • We take work life balance very seriously. We require employees to take 15 days off but provide unlimited PTO and follow most US federal government holidays.
  • Mental health is just as important as physical so we provide quarterly health & wellness benefits.
  • Comprehensive health insurance for you and your family with 100% coverage for employees.
  • We encourage employees to save for retirement and provide 4% 401(k) matching.
  • Each year we have a 4-day company offsite. Previous locations include San Francisco, Nashville, Denver, Santa Fe, New Orleans, San Diego, Bozeman, and New York City.
  • Our culture and company is evolving. You will be key in creating the next major or minor version!
