What is a fruit pick?

Fruit pickers are agricultural workers responsible for harvesting fruits from trees, bushes, or vines. Their main duties include selecting ripe produce, picking it carefully to avoid damage, and sometimes sorting or packing the fruit for transport. Fruit pickers often work outdoors, sometimes in challenging weather conditions, and may be required to use ladders or other equipment. This role is essential for ensuring that fruit crops are collected efficiently and reach markets in good condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fruit pick, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fruit Picker, you need good physical stamina, hand-eye coordination, and attention to detail, often with minimal formal education required. Familiarity with basic harvesting tools and sometimes knowledge of quality grading systems is helpful. Reliability, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under varying weather conditions are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure efficient harvesting, high-quality produce, and smooth operations within agricultural teams.

What are some common challenges fruit pickers face during the harvest season, and how can they be managed?

Fruit pickers often encounter physically demanding work, long hours, and varying weather conditions during the harvest season. It is important to stay hydrated, wear appropriate clothing for protection from the sun and insects, and use proper lifting techniques to prevent injury. Teamwork and clear communication with supervisors can help address issues quickly, and many employers offer training on safety and efficient picking methods to support workers throughout the season.

Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right position matching their skills and preferences.

Do fruit pickers get minimum wage?

Fruit pickers are generally entitled to at least the minimum wage set by local labor laws. However, some seasonal or migrant workers may be paid piece rates based on the amount of fruit they harvest, which can sometimes result in earnings below minimum wage if not properly regulated. Employers must comply with wage laws regardless of payment method.

Job description

Harvest Fruit and Fight Hunger in Thousand Oaks! job at Food Forward. Thousand Oaks, CA.

Who

Do you like fighting hunger & food waste in your own community, making your own volunteer schedule, and working outside? You may love being a Harvest Leader! Harvest Leaders are trained volunteers who harvest fruit all across Southern California.

You must be at least 16 years old to train as a Harvest Leader, and volunteers 16 - 17 years old must have a parent or legal guardian who trains and volunteers with them.

What

Harvest Leaders can choose to harvest fruit trees in any of the following ways: (1) by themselves; (2) with family and/or friends; or (3) by leading harvest events that are open to volunteers from the public (which Food Forward recruits for you). Food Forward communicates with homeowners and managers of private properties, parks, farms, and orchards who are interested in donating their fruit. Weโ€™ll help you identify a property and a time that works for you to harvest. You just need to bring some equipment (which weโ€™ll give you), register any people joining you and help them get started, and harvest as much fruit as possible!

You will need to be comfortable lifting boxes weighing 20 pounds. Youโ€™ll also need reliable access to a vehicle to transport harvesting equipment and deliver the produce to a local hunger relief agency. Food Forward provides liability insurance for the event.

When

Extremely flexible! You can let us know what days and times you prefer to volunteer, but we ask Pick Leaders to commit to volunteering at 6 harvest events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if youโ€™d like to volunteer more, weโ€™d be thrilled. Harvest events take 2-3 hours in total, including setting up before and wrapping up after.

Where

We harvest fruit (and some veggies too) all across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, although we need Harvest Leaders in Thousand Oaks specifically.

Why

We often have more fruit-filled properties than we are able to harvest. Without more Pick Leaders, that fruit will go to waste! A Harvest Leader and a few other volunteers will harvest hundreds of pounds of food to donate at an average harvest event.

Joining our Event Leader community also connects you with folks from all walks of life who are passionate about food access, food waste, sustainability, and the outdoors. Youโ€™ll have a regular opportunity to make a big impact, and youโ€™ll get to meet some great people and trees along the way.

How

We'll have you check out a harvest with a trained Harvest Leader. If you love it, we'll get you through the rest of our training and paperwork process! A background check (free to you) is required.
