Job description

POSITION: Instructional Paraprofessional 

LOCATION: SCOPE South (Location: TBD)

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

START DATE: August 17, 2026

CLOSING DATE: Open Until Filled

JOB SUMMARY:

An instructional paraprofessional in a school provides support to teachers and other school staff in delivering quality education and services to students. This role involves assisting with classroom activities, supporting students' learning needs, and ensuring that students stay engaged in their lessons. Instructional paraprofessionals typically work in general education or special education classrooms, providing both individual and small group assistance. Additionally, an instructional paraprofessional may also work closely with students with disabilities or special needs, providing individualized support to help them access and succeed in the educational environment. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold or be eligible for an instructional paraeducator permit
  • High school diploma or equivalent (additional certifications may be required)
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with children, especially in an educational setting who have diverse learning styles and needs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other school staff
  • The ability to quickly adjust to changing environments, new tasks, or different needs

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Work with teachers to implement lesson plans, provide one-on-one or small group support, and assist in reinforcing concepts taught in the classroom.
  • Monitor student behavior, help with classroom management, and ensure a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.
  • Follow and assist in the implementation of students' IEPs by providing tailored support to students with special needs.
  • Help administer assessments, track student progress, and document data related to student performance.
  • Support students during non-classroom activities, such as recess, lunch, and field trips, ensuring students' social and emotional needs are met.
  • Communicate regularly with teachers to provide updates on student progress, challenges, and behaviors. Assist in developing strategies to help students succeed.
  • Help implement strategies for managing behaviors and assisting students in developing appropriate social and behavioral skills.
  • Work directly with students who have physical, emotional, or learning disabilities, providing tailored instruction, behavioral support, and emotional assistance.
  • Follow specific therapeutic or instructional strategies designed to support students' unique learning needs.
  • Assist students in developing self-help and independence skills, particularly those with developmental disabilities or significant learning challenges.
  • Assist students with communication difficulties, including using augmentative or alternative communication devices and facilitating interactions with peers and staff.
  • Support students in social interactions, helping them develop social skills and emotional regulation techniques in and outside the classroom.
  • Help with group work or guided content activities, ensuring that students remain on task and understand the material.
  • Prepare materials and resources that are aligned with lesson plans, ensuring students have the tools they need for successful learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

This is a 10-month position based on a 188-day annual contract. Employees are expected to work 7.5 hours per day, consistent with the established school and district schedules. Responsibilities may include duties beyond instructional time, such as meetings, professional development, and school-related events. Employees are expected to maintain regular attendance, fulfill all assigned responsibilities, and demonstrate flexibility to meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the district.
