What is a frontend staff software engineer?

Frontend Staff Software Engineers are senior-level engineers who specialize in building and optimizing the user interfaces of web or mobile applications. They lead technical initiatives, mentor other engineers, and ensure that frontend architectures are scalable, performant, and maintainable. In addition to hands-on coding, they often collaborate with cross-functional teams to set technical direction, review code, and enforce best practices. Their role is crucial in delivering a seamless and high-quality user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend staff software engineer?

To thrive as a Frontend Staff Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, modern frontend frameworks (such as React or Angular), and a strong background in computer science, usually evidenced by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with build tools, version control systems like Git, and testing frameworks, as well as experience with cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines, is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you mentor teams and collaborate across departments. These skills are crucial for designing scalable, maintainable web applications and providing technical direction that drives organizational success.

How do frontend staff software engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver large-scale projects?

Frontend Staff Software Engineers often act as technical leaders, working closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to align on project requirements and architectural decisions. They facilitate regular code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and help set coding standards to ensure consistency across teams. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint planning, design reviews, and technical discussions to break down complex features into manageable tasks. This role requires balancing hands-on coding with strategic oversight to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of user-facing applications.

What is the difference between Frontend Staff Software Engineer vs Frontend Software Engineer?

Job Description
Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Austin, TX location three times per week.
About the Role:
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help build and enhance owner authenticated web experiences where customers interact with their vehicle, account, and ownership features across GM digital experiences.
This role will contribute across both the front end and back end, with a strong emphasis on React-based UI development and Java-based services. Within this space, the strategic web direction is aligned to the Global Web Platform stack built on React, while the current backend model includes Java and Spring Boot services that act as gateway and business-layer components.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned software engineer who can lead complex technical initiatives, shape architecture, influence engineering direction across teams, and deliver high-quality solutions with a high degree of autonomy.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, and delivery of scalable full stack solutions for owner authenticated web experiences across web applications and supporting backend services.
  • Drive front-end engineering direction through reusable, accessible, and performant React components, patterns, and modern UI practices aligned to GM web platform direction.
  • Design and evolve Java and Spring Boot backend services and APIs that support customer-facing product capabilities, integrations, scalability, and operational excellence.
  • Own complex technical initiatives end to end across the front end and back end, from solution design and implementation through rollout, support, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with product, design, and peer engineering teams to shape technical strategy and deliver high-impact owner-facing authenticated web capabilities.
  • Influence application architecture, platform patterns, and engineering standards across multiple workstreams and teams.
  • Proactively identify system risks, performance bottlenecks, and technical debt, and lead efforts to improve reliability, maintainability, and developer efficiency.
  • Guide code reviews, testing strategy, CI/CD practices, and production readiness to ensure high-quality software delivery.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the team, raising the bar on design quality, implementation practices, and technical decision-making.
  • Collaborate effectively across teams and domains, connecting technical execution to broader GM digital platform initiatives and business goals.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of software engineering experience.
  • Deep front-end development expertise with React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks, architecture patterns, and tooling.
  • Strong backend development expertise with Java and Spring Boot or comparable enterprise Java frameworks.
  • Experience designing, building, and evolving distributed systems, RESTful APIs, and integrations between front-end applications and backend services.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals including system design, version control, testing, debugging, performance optimization, and software development lifecycle practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives with a high degree of autonomy and sound engineering judgment.
  • Ability to influence technical direction, drive standards, and make decisions that improve scalability, maintainability, quality, and delivery effectiveness.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to influence peers, partner effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, and mentor other engineers.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience leading modernization of legacy web applications to React-based architectures.
  • Experience with micro-frontend or modular web application patterns.
  • Familiarity with design systems, reusable component libraries, and shared platform capabilities.
  • Experience supporting customer identity, account, profile, or ownership-related digital products.
  • Experience with cloud-native application development, observability, and production support in enterprise environments.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and shaping engineering best practices across a team or organization.
