What is a frontend developer at a startup?

Frontend Developers at startups are responsible for building and maintaining the user-facing parts of web or mobile applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various frameworks (such as React or Vue) to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces. At startups, frontend developers often work closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers, and may take on a wider range of responsibilities due to smaller team sizes. This role requires adaptability, creative problem-solving, and a strong understanding of user experience. The fast-paced startup environment usually means frequent changes and rapid iteration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend developer at a startup?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer at a startup, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Vue, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and cloud deployment platforms is typically expected. Adaptability, creativity, and effective communication help you collaborate in fast-paced, cross-functional startup environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for rapidly delivering user-friendly, scalable solutions that drive business growth in a competitive market.

What are some unique challenges a frontend developer may face when working at a startup compared to a larger company?

Frontend Developers at startups often encounter fast-paced environments where priorities can shift rapidly. You may be responsible for a broad range of tasks, from designing UI components to optimizing performance, sometimes with limited resources or guidance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—like backend developers, product managers, and designers—is usually close-knit and informal, offering opportunities to make a significant impact but also requiring adaptability and strong communication skills. This setting encourages innovation and rapid learning, but it can be challenging to balance multiple responsibilities and tight deadlines.

Job description

Company Description

MyTime is a fully integrated scheduling, payments, and automated marketing platform, specializing in large multi-location chains and franchises. Our mission critical software -- which includes in-store scheduling and online booking, client record management, email and SMS marketing, and a full point of sale for handling payments -- is used in every aspect of the customer journey. Our customers rely on their service businesses to remain competitive in the age of Amazon, and they need a next generation POS to help them achieve this growth. We aspire to be the "operating system" of their business.

We also made it easy to plug our online booking, payments and messaging capabilities into the places customers are found today, including Google Search, Facebook, Instagram, and the merchants' own websites and mobile apps. Upon adopting MyTime, our customers see average revenue growth of up to 30% through improved operational efficiency, greater customer retention, and access to new customer acquisition channels.

Our product is used at over 14,000 locations across the globe, ranging from single-location sole proprietors to multi-billion dollar Fortune 500 chains. As a completely cloud-based solution, MyTime is designed for quick and easy deployments. It's lauded for its ease-of-use and short ramp-up time, having won numerous awards such as the Best Commerce Product of 2017 from the Local Search Association.

MyTime is backed by leading venture capital firms such as Upfront Ventures and Khosla Ventures.

Come help us realize our vision of becoming the world's leading online scheduling and local commerce platform!

Job Description

You will be working working on the frontend of the MyTime web application, working closely with a talented team of UX designers and engineers to implement and ship scalable and well-tested features in our highly available platform. You'll strive to create responsive pixel-perfect web UIs while simultaneously solving scalability problems, performance optimizations, and complex business logic. The MyTime application is used by millions of consumers and tens of thousands of employees each month to interact and transact with one another in the modern era. Engineers at MyTime are responsible not just for writing code, but ensuring that it gets deployed and works properly in production.

You should have prior experience developing high quality software and be excited about doing it at a fast growing company. You should also know how to have productive technical discussions and be ready to continuously iterate on features based on feedback from our analytics as well as user feedback.

You'll also help in other aspects of building a new company: Designing features, making good product decisions, and building a culture of excellence. While we work independently, we support each other through frequent code and design reviews, daily stand-ups, and pair programming which facilitates learning and reducing friction in our nightly release schedule. We're seeking engineers who are ready to attack deep technical challenges as well as have an impactful role in product and company development!

Responsibilities:

  • Develop quality Angular/React code with proper unit specs and documentation

  • Implement new features with a focus on both design and performance on all supported browsers. We currently support evergreen browsers.

  • Prioritize scalability, speed, and security in both your code and during code reviews.

  • Engage in discussions and reviews of upcoming features, taking ownership of your work while collaborating with team members to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • Motivate and educate team members on coding standards and best practices both within the team and as part of the architecture group.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of Angular experience, including Angular.js and Angular2+
  • Experience with the state management libraries such as redux
  • Desire to learn and become proficient with the Angular 18 or 19 framework
  • Comfortable writing frontend unit tests
  • Experience with performance analysis and optimization in the frontend
  • Detail oriented and conscientious in implementing designs
  • Self motivator with strong communication skills
  • Degree in computer science or a related field is preferred, but not required
  • While not mandatory, having experience with CoffeeScript and webpack is preferred.
  • Experience with Bootstrap or Tailwindcss is a bonus.
