Frontend Developer Startup information

What is a frontend developer at a startup?

Frontend Developers at startups are responsible for building and maintaining the user-facing parts of web or mobile applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various frameworks (such as React or Vue) to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces. At startups, frontend developers often work closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers, and may take on a wider range of responsibilities due to smaller team sizes. This role requires adaptability, creative problem-solving, and a strong understanding of user experience. The fast-paced startup environment usually means frequent changes and rapid iteration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend developer at a startup?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer at a startup, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Vue, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and cloud deployment platforms is typically expected. Adaptability, creativity, and effective communication help you collaborate in fast-paced, cross-functional startup environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for rapidly delivering user-friendly, scalable solutions that drive business growth in a competitive market.

What are some unique challenges a frontend developer may face when working at a startup compared to a larger company?

Frontend Developers at startups often encounter fast-paced environments where priorities can shift rapidly. You may be responsible for a broad range of tasks, from designing UI components to optimizing performance, sometimes with limited resources or guidance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—like backend developers, product managers, and designers—is usually close-knit and informal, offering opportunities to make a significant impact but also requiring adaptability and strong communication skills. This setting encourages innovation and rapid learning, but it can be challenging to balance multiple responsibilities and tight deadlines.

Job description

About Rune

Rune Technologies builds mission-critical software for military logistics and sustainment. Our flagship product is TyrOS, an AI-enabled logistics command and control platform that gives commanders a single, real-time operating picture of their sustainment fight, from inventory and distribution to medical and operational planning, even in degraded and contested environments.

We’re not a traditional defense contractor. We’re a small, fast-moving team that combines deep operational experience in and with the DoD with the software discipline of the best product companies, and we apply that combination to a customer set that desperately needs it. We stay close to our users by embedding directly with military units during exercises and rotations, and we ship constantly based on what we learn.

The U.S. military and its allies face a real logistics modernization problem. We’re building the software to solve it.

About the Role

At Rune Technologies, we are building the logistics technology backbone that the U.S. and allied militaries need to dominate in large-scale combat operations. As a Front End Software Engineer at Rune, you will be part of a high-impact team working at the intersection of modern web engineering, operational logistics software, and mission-critical user experiences -- all in support of the warfighter at the tactical edge.

You’ll join us in our mission to bring 21st-century software to the sustainment domain -- modernizing inventory management, transportation optimization, and predictive maintenance through intuitive, high-performance applications. You’ll work closely with product designers, backend engineers, and operational experts to build software that transforms complex logistics workflows into powerful and accessible user experiences.

This is a front-end engineering role first and foremost. We’re looking for someone who has dedicated their career to building sophisticated web applications, possesses deep expertise in React or Angular, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript, and takes pride in owning front-end architecture and technical direction. The ideal candidate is a builder who has created significant products from the ground up, thrives in fast-moving environments, and cares deeply about delivering software that performs reliably in real-world operational settings.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain complex, production-grade front-end applications using React (preferred) or Angular, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript.
  • Own front-end architecture decisions, establishing scalable patterns, frameworks, and engineering best practices that support long-term product growth.
  • Develop intuitive user experiences that enable operators to rapidly understand and act on complex logistics and operational data.
  • Collaborate closely with product designers, backend engineers, and military subject matter experts to translate mission requirements into high-quality software.
  • Build data-intensive interfaces, visualizations, and real-time user experiences that surface critical operational insights.
  • Integrate with APIs, WebSocket-based services, and distributed backend systems to deliver responsive, high-performance applications.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical design discussions, and engineering standards that raise the quality and maintainability of the platform.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks, usability issues, and production incidents to ensure reliability in demanding operational environments.
  • Help shape the future of Rune’s front-end platform by identifying opportunities for technical innovation, improved developer experience, and enhanced user impact.
Qualifications
  • Expert in React (preferred) or Angular — one must be primary, not both at a surface level
  • TypeScript and JavaScript as primary languages; strong command of HTML
  • 4+ years of experience with 75%+ in pure front end roles
  • Has built significant, non-trivial front-end products — not just maintained existing codebases
  • Can own front end architecture decisions, not just implement tickets
Desired Qualifications
  • Portfolio demonstrating independent, significant front-end work (common for strong FEEs)
  • Experience with data-intensive front ends and data visualization (D3.js or similar)
  • Experience with mapping libraries — Mapbox, MapLibre
  • WebSockets experience — real-time, high-throughput UI
  • Has worked at a startup and built something from scratch
Benefits

Rune offers top-tier benefits for full-time employees to include a full suite of insurance options at no cost for employees and low-cost to spouses and dependents. Highly competitive equity grants are also included in the majority of full time offers and are considered part of Rune’s total compensation package. Benefits include:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans; premiums 100% covered by Rune for all employees; exceptionally low premiums for spouses and dependents
  • Basic life insurance and disability 100% covered for all employees by Rune; option to purchase additional life insurance available
  • ‘Take the time off that you need, when you need it’ paid time off, not accrual based
  • Generous company holiday calendar including a holiday shutdown in December
  • Supportive leave of absence program including time off for military service, medical events, and parental leave
  • Full 401(k) retirement plan for all full-time eligible employees
  • Company-funded commuter benefits
  • Free access to on-site gym at office
