AspectFront End Software EngineerWeb Developer
Primary FocusBuilding and optimizing user interfaces and client-side applicationsDeveloping websites and web applications, including both front-end and back-end tasks
Skills & CertificationsHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks (React, Angular), UI/UX designHTML, CSS, JavaScript, sometimes back-end languages (PHP, Python), CMS platforms

What is a front end software engineer?

A front end software engineer or developer designs websites and applications, often using JavaScript and CSS, to ensure that client-side software can run them optimally. As a front end software engineer, you must evaluate system design, networking, and data compression to ensure a website or application is efficient and can handle high-volume traffic. Your focus is on web usability and a seamless user experience. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science. Companies expect a front end software engineer to understand JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. You can gain additional employment opportunities with knowledge of C++, AJAX, and Python.

What does a front end software engineer do?

A Front End Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly. Additionally, they work closely with designers and back end developers to ensure seamless integration and optimal user experiences. Their role often involves optimizing web performance, ensuring cross-browser compatibility, and implementing responsive design for various devices.

Q2 is a leading provider of digital banking and lending solutions to banks, credit unions, alternative finance companies, and fintechs in the U.S. and internationally. Our mission is simple: build strong and diverse communities through innovative financial technology—and we do that by empowering our people to help create success for our customers.

SUMMARY

The Team

The Targeted Experiences team builds and evolves SMART, Q2’s personalization and targeting platform for digital banking.

SMART turns real-time behavioral, transactional, and partner data into actionable insights that can be activated across digital banking experiences and external systems. In addition to building the platform itself, the team owns partner enablement — ensuring SMART is reliable, well-documented, and ready for consumption by external developers, fintech partners, and marketing platforms.

The team is intentionally multi-disciplinary and owns the stack end to end, bringing together engineers with backgrounds in backend and frontend software engineering, data engineering, and data science. As SMART evolves, the team’s scope will continue to expand beyond a single product toward broader targeted and personalized experience capabilities across Q2’s ecosystem.

The Role

Q2 is seeking a Sr Software Engineer to join the Targeted Experiences team and help build the platform capabilities behind SMART.

In this role, you will work both independently and collaboratively to design, implement, and operate cloud-native, data-driven services that power personalization and targeted experiences across Q2’s platform and partner ecosystem. This is a production-first engineering role: the systems you build will run in live environments, handle real customer data, and be consumed by both internal teams and external developers.

We are looking for engineers who enjoy working across the stack, care deeply about correctness and reliability, and are comfortable operating in a fast-moving platform environment where quality matters.

A Typical Day

  • Design, implement, integrate, and test backend and/or full-stack services of moderate complexity, including APIs, data pipelines, and platform components.
  • Work individually and collaboratively to deliver features and improvements in live production systems.
  • Create and automate detailed test cases during development.
  • Build and evolve services that integrate with internal Q2 systems, external partners, and third-party platforms.
  • Contribute to the operability of the platform, including monitoring, alerting, debugging, and incident resolution.
  • Support, maintain, and improve existing services, with occasional on-call participation.
  • Ensure all solutions adhere to security, privacy, availability, and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions, contributing to shared standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, data engineers, and data scientists to deliver cohesive platform capabilities.

Bring Your Passion. Here’s What We’re Looking For.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically 5+ years of professional software engineering experience for Intermediate level
  • Experience building backend services; full-stack experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and single page applications
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages
  • Experience working in a cloud-based environment (AWS preferred).
  • Familiarity with service-oriented or distributed architectures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in a team setting.
  • Experience contributing in an Agile or it

RESPONSIBILITIES • Design, implement, integrate, and test software solutions of moderate complexity, including Windows- and Linux-based front-end and back-end components. • Deliver solutions in live production systems individually and collaboratively. • Support, maintain, and resolve issues for custom features in production systems; occasional on-call availability may be required. • Ensure adherence to all security, availability, confidentiality, and privacy policies and controls. • Assist and mentor teammates, providing technical leadership and advocating best practices. EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. • 5–8 years of software development experience. • Full-stack .NET development (SQL Server, C#, HTML/CSS, JavaScript). • Familiarity with MVVM and front-end frameworks (Vue, Angular, React). • Experience with test automation frameworks and auto-mocking tooling. • Practical experience with multiple design patterns and SOLID principles. • Domain experience in banking is a plus. • Proficiency in Python and SQL. • Web development experience. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. • Experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle and service-oriented architecture. • Experience in Agile development environments. • Ability to work flexible hours and provide occasional on-call/emergency support.
