As a Chaplain Resident, you are part of a one-year training program to complete three units of ACPE CPE through Mercy CPE. Chaplain Residents collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to deliver person-centered spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and caregivers in diverse clinical settings, integrating innovative technology that ensures consistency and accessibility throughout the full care continuum. Chaplain Residents reflect Mercy’s mission, values, and charisms, strengthening a modern spiritual care approach that honors our tradition while expanding the reach of spiritual care through emerging innovations. Position Details:
Chaplain Resident

Rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus and inspired by the Sisters of Mercy, the Chaplain Resident supports Mercy's Model of Spiritual Care by providing compassionate spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and caregivers across diverse clinical settings. This one-year residency program includes completion of three units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through Mercy CPE under the supervision of an ACPE Certified Educator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide spiritual and emotional support through empathetic listening, presence, and crisis intervention.
  • Assess and respond to the spiritual needs of patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Collaborate with chaplains, interdisciplinary care teams, and visiting clergy.
  • Respond to trauma, crisis, and critical care situations as assigned.
  • Document spiritual care encounters in Epic in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Participate actively in the CPE learning process, including reflection, supervision, and professional development.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that supports interfaith and ecumenical engagement.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
  • Provide on-call spiritual care coverage as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate theological education from a CHEA-accredited institution, or completion of a Catholic formation program meeting national diaconate standards.

Experience

  • Completion of one (1) accredited CPE unit (ACPE, CPEi, or CPSP).
  • Three (3) months of healthcare chaplaincy experience (CPE may be considered).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide compassionate care in complex and sensitive situations.
  • Effective collaboration within interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Understanding of spiritual assessment, crisis response, and professional documentation.
  • Commitment to reflection, lifelong learning, and serving individuals from diverse faith traditions.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to changing patient and organizational needs.
