What are from home ASHRAE jobs?

'From Home ASHRAE' jobs refer to remote positions related to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). These jobs typically involve tasks such as HVAC system design, energy modeling, standards compliance, or technical consulting that can be performed from a home office. Professionals in these roles may work for engineering firms, consulting companies, or directly with organizations seeking ASHRAE expertise. Remote ASHRAE jobs allow flexibility while ensuring that industry standards and best practices are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ASHRAE professional?

To thrive as a remote ASHRAE professional, you need a solid background in HVAC engineering, building systems design, and a relevant engineering degree or certification, such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, and energy modeling tools, along with ASHRAE standards, is crucial. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and clients remotely. These skills ensure you can deliver innovative, compliant, and energy-efficient solutions while maintaining productivity and quality from a remote setting.

How does working remotely as an ASHRAE-certified professional impact collaboration with on-site engineering teams?

Remote ASHRAE-certified professionals frequently collaborate with on-site engineers through virtual meetings, shared design platforms, and cloud-based project management tools. While communication can be a challenge, most teams establish regular check-ins and utilize detailed documentation to ensure alignment on HVAC system design and standards compliance. You may also be required to occasionally visit job sites for inspections or critical project phases. This remote structure offers flexibility but demands strong self-organization, proactive communication, and familiarity with digital collaboration tools.

  • Develop, review, and coordinate mechanical design documents, including drawings, specifications, schedules, and calculations for healthcare projects.
  • Provide construction administration support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and supporting field coordination during construction.
  • Design and coordinate HVAC systems and related mechanical infrastructure for healthcare facilities, including hospital patient floors, procedure suites, and equipment suites.
  • Ensure all mechanical designs comply with applicable ASHRAE standards, mechanical codes, and healthcare-specific codes and guidelines.
  • Identify and resolve design and coordination issues within the mechanical engineering team and with other disciplines.
  • Mentor junior engineers through the full design process, providing guidance, technical review, and feedback to support their development.
  • Collaborate closely with project teams to manage design schedules and support adherence to project budgets.
  • Use Revit and AutoCAD to produce and update mechanical drawings and models, ensuring accuracy and coordination with other trades.
  • Support infrastructure-focused projects by developing robust mechanical solutions for building systems and utilities.
  • Participate in coordination meetings in the office and at project sites as needed to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Document and communicate healthcare project experience, including specific project types and responsibilities, for internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Skills

  • 10–15+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including significant involvement in building systems design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Proven healthcare project experience, including hospital patient floors, procedure suites, equipment suites, and working knowledge of hospital codes.
  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE standards and mechanical codes and certifications relevant to building systems.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of HVAC systems design and operation for commercial and healthcare facilities.
  • Proficiency with Revit for mechanical design and modeling.
  • Experience using AutoCAD for mechanical drafting and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the mechanical design process from concept through construction documents and construction administration.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to identify and address issues within the mechanical engineering team.
  • Mentorship skills with experience guiding junior engineers through the full design lifecycle.
  • Infrastructure project experience related to mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, coordinating both in-office and remote activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with HVAC design for complex healthcare environments, including patient care areas and specialized equipment spaces.
  • Familiarity with construction administration activities such as site visits, coordination with contractors, and field issue resolution.
  • Experience developing and managing design schedules and supporting project budget adherence.
  • Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously in a collaborative team setting.
  • Ability to clearly document healthcare project experience, including project types, phases, and responsibilities.
