Main Function / General Purpose: The Anesthesia Technician performs a variety of technical and supportive patient care tasks to assist attending anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in performing safe and efficient anesthetic procedures. This role spans care for patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics, exercising a high degree of skill, judgment, and knowledge of operating room terminology and practices.
Responsibilities include preparing and troubleshooting advanced anesthesia equipment, maintaining supply chains, managing medication setups, and providing direct support during complex and ectopic (out-of-OR) procedures. The individual must work effectively under pressure in a stressful environment, communicate professionally, and adhere strictly to departmental policies and clinical standards.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Clinical & Equipment Support
- Preparation & Setup: Prepares and places anesthesia equipment, medications, and supplies in operating rooms and mobile carts prior to patient arrival, customized to case variables (patient age, case type, and length).
- Technical Operations: Performs moderate to advanced equipment setup, calibration, operation, and troubleshooting for anesthesia machines and monitoring systems.
- Specialized Programs: Participates in advanced or specialized clinical programs, including the Cell Saver and Liver Transplant programs, ensuring proper equipment is ready for complex cases.
- Ectopic Procedures: Performs setup and provides technical support for anesthesia care during out-of-OR (ectopic) procedures, ensuring standard safety equipment is present.
- Provider Resource: Functions as a reliable, go-to resource for Anesthesiology providers and operating room staff in all anesthesia-related matters.
Operational & Supply Chain Management
- Inventory Control: Orders, stocks, and maintains anesthesia supplies in both the central workroom and designated operating rooms, ensuring clinical cleanliness and availability.
- Administrative Duties: Accurately enters anesthesia billing information into the data system and handles routine documentation.
- Environmental Standards: Ensures cleanliness of anesthesia equipment and fields in accordance with sterile techniques and hospital infection control policies.

- On-Call Shift Work: Active participation in the departmental on-call rotation is required for this position (including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed).

Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Minimum Education: Associate degree including technical training closely related to the position OR a High School diploma/equivalent required, combined with an equivalent mix of education and clinical experience (e.g., 2 years of college coursework in biology, physiology, anatomy, or related scientific fields preferred).
- Minimum Experience: At least 1 year of direct patient care experience working in a hospital or clinically related area (e.g., Nurse Aide, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomist), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Preferred Certifications & Knowledge
- Certification: American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) Certification preferred, or a willingness to obtain it within 5 years of hire.
- Clinical Knowledge: Strong familiarity with operating room etiquette, sterile techniques/fields, and advanced anesthesia methodologies.
