What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Friar, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Friar, you generally need a deep understanding of theology, spiritual discipline, and commitment to religious life, often supported by formal seminary training or religious education. Familiarity with liturgical practices, sacred texts, and sometimes proficiency in Latin or other languages used in religious rites can be important. Strong interpersonal skills, compassion, humility, and the ability to counsel and lead a community are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for effectively serving and guiding community members, upholding religious traditions, and fostering spiritual growth.

What are some common challenges faced by friars working in modern religious communities?

Friars often face the challenge of balancing traditional religious duties, such as prayer and service, with the evolving needs of the communities they serve. They may work in schools, hospitals, or outreach programs, requiring adaptability and strong interpersonal skills. Another common challenge is maintaining a sense of community and personal spiritual growth amid busy schedules and diverse responsibilities. Collaboration with other friars and laypeople is essential, as is ongoing learning to address contemporary social and pastoral issues.

What are Friars?

Friars are members of certain religious orders within the Catholic Church who take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Unlike monks, friars are not cloistered and often live and work among the general public, serving communities through preaching, teaching, and charitable activities. The most well-known friar orders include the Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites, and Augustinians. Friars dedicate their lives to spiritual service and often play active roles in social and pastoral work.

Job description

Registered Nurse (part-time)

Order of Friars Minor โ€“ Franciscan U.S. Organization

Cincinnati, OH

Organizational background and Mission

We Franciscans owe our inspiration to Francesco di Bernardone, an affluent young merchant from the Italian town of Assisi, who in 1206 renounced his wealth and social status in favor of a life dedicated to God and the poor. His life and ministry inspired other men to join him and become the first Franciscan friars.

Today, Francesco is known as St. Francis of Assisi, and the Order of Friars Minor comprises more than 100 provinces located around the world. The Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a unified, US coast-to-coast Catholic brotherhood devoted to living the Gospel in the manner of St. Francis of Assisi and in imitation of Jesus Christ. They serve the poor, the forgotten and the marginalized alongside people of goodwill located across the United States, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Jamaica.โ€ฏ

Founded in October 2023, the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe was formed from friars coming together from six legacy provinces, which are part of the long history of the Order of Friars Minor in the United States. Combining their gifts has allowed them to renew their Franciscan witness to American society and begin an exciting new chapter of their history in the United States.
