They typically support classroom teachers by helping students improve their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in French. French Monitors may also organize cultural activities, lead conversation groups, and provide one-on-one language assistance. Their main role is to create an immersive and engaging environment to help learners gain confidence in using French.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a French monitor?

To thrive as a French Monitor, you need strong proficiency in French language, a good understanding of language acquisition techniques, and often a post-secondary education or relevant certification. Student Monitor

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Reports To: Extended Learning Manager Start Date: Immediate Schedule: 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday (hours vary based on program needs)

French International School of Oregon develops curious and critical thinkers through an immersive multilingual curriculum. We foster an inclusive community that values diverse perspectives and encourages collaboration, inquiry, and growth. Our small classes, fluent-speaking teachers, and forested campus create a supportive environment for students and staff alike.

Position Summary

French International School of Oregon (FI) is seeking an energetic, responsible, and creative Full-Time Student Monitor to join our Extended Learning team. Student Monitors supervise FI students during non-classroom times throughout the school day and after school, including lunch, recess, pickup, and Aftercare. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure a safe, engaging, and supportive environment during these "in-between" periods. Creativity, flexibility, and a positive attitude are essential for success in this role. Full-Time Student Monitors also play a key role in supporting ACE (Arts and Cultural Enrichment) Week, Summer Camps, and other special programs. Participation in optional programs is offered under a separate contract and is at the discretion of the Extended Learning Manager. This is a full-time, on-campus position.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Uphold safety and provide close supervision of students at all times.
  • Supervise students during lunch, recess, pickup, and other non-classroom periods throughout the school day.
  • Supervise students after school during the Aftercare program.
  • Provide snacks during Aftercare.
  • Escort students to Afterschool Explorer classes and designated pickup areas.
  • Provide transitional coverage for Teachers and Teacher Assistants as needed.
  • Collaboratively plan and facilitate fun, engaging activities for Aftercare, ACE Week, Summer Camps, and other programs as assigned.
  • Attend department meetings and in-service day trainings.
  • Help maintain safe, clean, and organized classrooms and activity spaces.
  • Support students in resolving conflicts using accountable talk and positive guidance strategies.
  • Establish, sustain, and encourage a positive and safe rapport with students and colleagues.
  • Communicate professionally and collaboratively with team members and supervisors.
  • Adhere to confidentiality requirements regarding student information.
  • Maintain all required trainings and compliance responsibilities per DELC standards.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working in childcare and/or educational settings.
  • Flexibility and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently when needed.
  • Physical mobility sufficient to ensure the safety of children.
  • Employment contingent upon successful enrollment in the Office of Child Care Central Background Registry.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree, or equivalent.
  • Fluency in French or another language besides English.
  • Interest in international education and experience living abroad and/or working in a multilingual environment.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

This position includes physical activity such as walking and standing for up to 1.5 hours at a time, bending, stooping, kneeling, running, sitting on the floor, and occasionally lifting children. Student supervision occurs predominantly outdoors in all seasons; therefore, Student Monitors will often perform duties in cold and wet weather conditions.

Additional Skills & Competencies
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and solution-oriented.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative with the ability to self-monitor work.
  • Commitment to FI's mission, core values, and guiding principles.
  • Willingness to stay current with technology and school-sponsored professional development.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting at $19.00/hour, depending on experience (DOE).
  • 403(b) retirement plan.
  • Health insurance coverage begins on the first of the month following your hire date; FI covers 100% of the employee's base medical premium.
  • Dental and basic life insurance coverage.
  • Opportunities to participate in FI's community events and enrichment programs.
