What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Videographer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Videographer, you need strong technical skills in camera operation, video editing, and storytelling, often supported by a portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, as well as proficiency with different camera equipment and audio gear, is essential. Excellent communication, project management, and client relationship skills help you stand out when working independently. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality videos, meeting client expectations, and growing a successful freelance business.

This career offers flexibility and creative freedom but also requires strong self-management, networking skills, and business acumen.

Job description

Job Description
Freelance Videographer (Half-Day & Full-Day Shoots)
We're looking to build a roster of reliable freelance videographers for ongoing project-based work across Hawaiʻi.
Most projects are documentary-style brand storytelling, executive interviews, community engagement, nonprofit storytelling, and organizational communications. We value people who can capture authentic moments, work professionally with clients, and move comfortably between structured interviews and real-world environments.
This is freelance contractor work on a per-project basis - typically half-day or full-day shoots.
What we are looking for
We're seeking videographers who are:
  • Technically strong and dependable
  • Comfortable working independently on-location
  • Professional and personable with clients
  • Strong visual storytellers
  • Experienced capturing interviews and natural b-roll
  • Able to work efficiently in real-world environments

Bonus if you:
  • Have experience conducting interviews
  • Understand branded documentary-style storytelling
  • Can anticipate moments without over-directing
  • Work well in fast-moving environments

Typical Project Types
  • Executive interviews
  • Community stories
  • Nonprofit storytelling
  • Event coverage
  • Corporate and organizational communications
  • Social and digital campaign content

Half-Day Shoot Scope (Typical)
~4-hour shoot
Usually 1 location with 1-2 interview subjects
Typical setup includes:
  • Single camera setup
  • Natural or available light
  • Handheld or gimbal b-roll
  • Lav mic audio setup
  • Interview conducted by videographer

For these smaller shoots, we're looking for someone who can comfortably guide a conversation and ask thoughtful follow-up questions naturally.
Full-Day Shoot Scope (Typical)
~8-hour shoot
Usually 2-3 locations with multiple interview subjects
  • Two-camera interview setup
  • Indoor interview lighting
  • Handheld or gimbal b-roll
  • Lav + shotgun audio setup
  • Agency interviewer present
Technical Requirements
Contractors provide their own equipment. Preferred specs include:
  • 4K capable camera
  • 10-bit 4:2:2 recording
  • Log shooting capability
  • Dual card recording
  • Professional audio monitoring
  • Ability to deliver footage on-site at wrap

Sony A7S series or equivalent preferred, though other systems are welcome if they meet production standards.
Additional Details
  • Oʻahu-based shoots primarily
  • Freelance / 1099 contractor basis
  • Project-by-project scheduling
  • Typical lead time: 2-4 weeks
  • Usage rights included in quoted rate
  • Work is generally white-labeled
  • Professional on-set appearance expected
How to submit your interest
  • Please send:
    • Resume or brief background
    • Portfolio website or reel
    • Notes about your interview/storytelling experience
    • Half-day rate
    • Full-day rate
    • Any kit fees (if separate)
  • We're less interested in flashy reels than we are in reliability, professionalism, strong instincts, and the ability to tell human stories well.
