Freelance Trauma Informed Coach information

What is a freelance trauma informed coach?

A freelance trauma informed coach is a professional who provides support and guidance to individuals by using coaching techniques that are sensitive to the effects of trauma. Unlike traditional coaching, trauma informed coaching recognizes the impact of past traumatic experiences on a person's current well-being and behavior. These coaches work independently, often with clients who have experienced trauma, helping them set goals, develop coping strategies, and build resilience in a safe and supportive environment. They may work with individuals, groups, or organizations, and tailor their approach to each client's unique needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance trauma informed coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Trauma Informed Coach, you need a strong understanding of trauma theory, coaching techniques, and psychology, often supported by certifications in trauma-informed care or coaching. Familiarity with digital communication tools, scheduling software, and secure client management systems is crucial for managing a private practice. Exceptional empathy, active listening, and strong boundary-setting skills help build trust and create a safe space for clients. These skills and qualities are vital for effectively supporting clients’ healing journeys while maintaining professionalism and ethical standards.

What are some common challenges freelance trauma informed coaches face when building and maintaining a client base?

Freelance trauma informed coaches often encounter challenges such as establishing trust with new clients, maintaining consistent referrals, and setting clear boundaries to prevent compassion fatigue. Because the work involves sensitive topics, building a strong professional reputation and ensuring confidentiality are essential. Networking with allied professionals, such as therapists and social workers, can help generate referrals, while ongoing education and supervision support both client care and coach well-being. Additionally, managing administrative tasks and self-promotion are crucial aspects of running a successful freelance practice.

Are you passionate about helping children, families, schools, and communities heal and grow stronger? Ohel is looking for a compassionate, experienced mental health professional to lead and expand our trauma response and resilience initiatives throughout South Florida. This is more than a clinical role, it's an opportunity to make a meaningful difference during life's most challenging moments while helping schools and communities build resilience for the future.

As a valued member of Ohel's National Trauma Team, you'll receive ongoing mentorship, supervision, and specialized training from nationally recognized trauma expert Dr. Norman Blumenthal, while working alongside a dedicated team committed to supporting individuals and communities in times of crisis.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate Ohel's trauma response services throughout South Florida in collaboration with Ohel's National Trauma Team

  • Respond to traumatic events affecting individuals, families, schools, synagogues, and community organizations

  • Recruit, mentor, supervise, and support members of the South Florida Trauma Team

  • Provide crisis intervention, death notification, pre-bereavement support, short-term counseling, and individual and family consultations

  • Partner with the Clinical Director of Ohel's South Florida outpatient mental health clinic to strengthen outreach, identify community needs, and expand access to behavioral health services

  • Build lasting relationships with schools, educators, healthcare providers, social service agencies, clergy, and community leaders

  • Deliver engaging workshops, webinars, and professional development for educators, administrators, clergy, and community organizations

  • Train and coach school personnel in trauma-informed practices, resilience-building, and social-emotional learning (SEL)

  • Help organizations respond to crises with compassion while promoting healing and preventing retraumatization

  • Represent Ohel through community presentations, outreach initiatives, educational events and social media

 Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or a related mental health field

  • At least 5 years of clinical experience, including trauma, crisis intervention, or disaster response (experience on a trauma response team is preferred)

  • Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed care, and social-emotional learning

  • Experience working in schools or educational settings

  • Excellent presentation, training, leadership, and public speaking skills

  • Experience recruiting, mentoring, and supervising teams is a plus

  • Comfortable using technology, multimedia, and social media for outreach and education

  • Calm, compassionate, flexible to provide steady support during times of crisis

When you join Ohel, you're joining a nationally respected organization dedicated to strengthening individuals, families, and communities through compassionate care and innovative programming. You'll have the opportunity to lead meaningful initiatives, expand trauma-informed services across South Florida, and help build stronger, more resilient communities. Position includes a competitive benefits package that includes a 403B retirement plan with employee contribution, sick and vacation paid time off (PTO). Eligibility for all benefits is based on hours worked, employment classification, and fulfillment of applicable waiting periods and plan requirements. This part time position is located in Hollywood, Florida.
