What is a freelance story analyst?

Freelance story analysts are professionals who read and evaluate scripts, manuscripts, or other narrative material for production companies, studios, or publishers. They provide written reports, often called coverage, that summarize the story, analyze its strengths and weaknesses, and assess its commercial potential or suitability for development. Working on a freelance basis, they are typically contracted per project, allowing them to work with multiple clients in the film, television, or publishing industries.

How do freelance story analysts typically structure their workflow when evaluating scripts for clients?

Freelance story analysts often organize their workflow by first conducting an initial read-through of the script to get a holistic sense of the story. They then re-read the material, taking detailed notes on elements such as plot structure, character development, pacing, and dialogue. Most analysts prepare a written report or coverage, which includes a summary, analysis, and recommendations tailored to the client's needs. Communication with producers, agents, or development executives is common, ensuring that feedback aligns with project goals. Managing multiple assignments and meeting tight deadlines are typical challenges in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance story analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Story Analyst, you need a deep understanding of narrative structure, character development, and genre conventions, often supported by a background in film, creative writing, or English. Familiarity with industry-standard script coverage formats and tools such as Final Draft or Celtx is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear, concise written communication set standout analysts apart. These skills enable accurate evaluation and effective feedback, helping studios and producers identify promising projects.

FREELANCE MARKETING ANALYST
Bader Rutter is a leading B2B full-service marketing and advertising agency. We do more than measure marketing. We unlock insights that drive better, smarter and braver decisions. If you’re a data storyteller who loves turning numbers into action, this freelance marketing analyst opportunity is for you. Support a collaborative, curious team for which data and creativity work hand in hand to shape meaningful outcomes for our clients.
Who You Are
You’re a strategic thinker with a passion for digging in to data and finding the story. You enjoy using your analytics skills to solve real-world marketing challenges and can translate complex findings into insights anyone can understand. You thrive in fast-moving environments and are comfortable balancing multiple clients and projects at once. You’re skilled in both the science (SQL, Python) and the art of analytics (data storytelling, business impact), and you’re always eager to learn more.
What You’ll Do
  • Analyze multichannel marketing performance — across paid media, search, social, email and web — to drive optimization and uncover meaningful insights.
  • Partner with media, creative, account and strategy teams to create smart measurement strategies rooted in business outcomes.
  • Provide thought leadership through strategic point of views and performance analytics best practices.
  • Present and provide counsel to clients and internal stakeholders with confidence and leadership presence.
  • Coach fellow analysts and collaborate across teams to elevate our work.
  • Work hands-on with databases and tools to run custom analyses using SQL and Python and visualization platforms like Tableau.
  • Translate data into compelling, digestible recommendations for clients and internal teams alike.
  • Stay current with client-specific martech stacks, AI tools, and digital analytics platforms like Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics.
What You Bring
  • 3-4 years of experience in marketing analytics
  • Bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, marketing, computer science, economics or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficiency in Tableau, SQL and Python a must
  • Strong consulting and communication skills — you’re confident presenting to technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Experience working with relational databases and navigating marketing performance across digital ecosystems
  • Passion for experimentation, optimization and continuous learning
What We Offer
  • Freelance engagement of 20-30 hours per week, ongoing, based on needs
  • Opportunity to work across a wide range of industries and marketing challenges
  • Supportive and inclusive culture where analytics plays a critical role in shaping our work
Location: Ideal candidates will be based in Milwaukee and could come into the office on occasion as needed.
