Sports Editor/Reporter-Longview, WA
Help The Daily News captivate and engage audiences by joining our award-winning staff as a sports editor/sports reporter.
The Ideal Candidate
A self-motivated journalist who enjoys having a hand in multiple parts of telling a good story and attracting an audience to it.
In the editor role, you will ensure stories are maximized for the greatest digital reach while shepherding our award-winning print sections through the production process.
You're an expert at leveraging analytics, video and multimedia to produce memorable journalism and build reader loyalty.
In the reporting role, you will cover eight or so high schools' sports in Lower Columbia and at the local community college. Coverage will include an emphasis on enterprise and trend stories with fresh angles that have wide appeal.
You will be part of a staff that encourages creativity and experimentation in how we tell stories. The position does require working some nights, weekends, holidays and occasional travel.
A journalism, communications or English degree is required, as well as previous newspaper experience. We are looking for a commitment of at least two-plus years.
This position reports to the local news editor.
Position Responsibilities
This position will have a mix of editing, administrative and writing duties to include:
  • Running the sports desk, including editing staff-written, freelance and wire copy to AP and local style standards while working with our regional design team to meet print deadlines
  • Taking photos and videos and updating social media feeds
  • Writing stories, features and columns with a focus on high school and college teams in Cowlitz County, Washington and Columbia County, Oregon
  • A willingness to be digitally savvy: Every game covered should have at least one video component to it, whether it be a highlight or an interview with an athlete
  • A willingness to be on live video streams and podcasts; knowledge of audio and video editing is helpful
  • Write SEO-friendly headlines for our digital audience and catchy headlines for social media and our print products
  • Strong organizational skills, with 100% energy on a daily basis is key to success
