What is freelance spatial design?

Freelance spatial design involves independent professionals who plan and create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces for clients in various settings, such as retail, exhibitions, events, or interiors. Unlike traditional employees, freelance spatial designers work on a project basis for different clients, offering flexibility and a wide range of creative opportunities. They often handle all aspects of a project, from initial concept and layout to selecting materials and overseeing installation, ensuring that the space meets both client needs and design standards.

How do freelance spatial designers typically collaborate with clients and other professionals throughout a project?

Freelance spatial designers often work closely with clients to understand their vision, requirements, and budget, holding regular meetings to ensure alignment. They also collaborate with architects, contractors, and suppliers to coordinate the technical aspects of layouts, materials, and installations. Clear communication and project management skills are crucial, as freelancers must balance creative solutions with practical constraints while keeping all stakeholders informed and engaged throughout the process.

Both roles overlap in space planning but differ in credentials, work environment, and industry focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Spatial Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Spatial Designer, you need strong spatial awareness, design principles knowledge, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating experience in interior, architectural, or exhibition design. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D rendering tools is typically required. Excellent communication, project management, and creative problem-solving skills help you collaborate with clients and manage independent projects effectively. These competencies ensure your ability to deliver innovative, functional spaces that meet client needs and industry standards.

Matic

Full-time

Job description

Company Overview
Each year, 2.5 trillion hours are spent on household chores. At Matic, we're on a mission to recapture that lost time, and we're doing it by revolutionizing home robotics.
Our first product, also called Matic, is a Wall-E-esque floor cleaning robot. We've built what amounts to "full self-driving in the home" with real-time 3D mapping, adaptive path-tracking, and a precise semantic understanding of the home. Our breakthroughs in spatial AI allow Matic to work reliably in real homes, using only RGB cameras and neural networks running on-device.
Privacy First
What happens in the home, stays in the home. Our robots are private by design, with all data processing performed by the robot itself, not in the cloud.
Our Approach
Before the iPhone, consumers adopted several distinct devices; cell phones, PDAs, and portable music players each served a particular need. We believe in a similar progression for home robotics, starting with single-purpose robots and building iteratively toward more complex capabilities over time.
Our Culture
Matic is a tight-knit and collaborative team, singularly focused on building products our customers will cherish. We're ultra-hardworking people committed to solving tough problems that save precious time and energy.
About the role
We're looking for a Visual & Marketing Designer to help bring Matic's brand, product, and marketing to life across digital and physical touchpoints.
In this role, you'll design assets for campaigns, product launches, social, email, web, and sales materials, working closely with product, marketing, and leadership. You'll help translate complex robotics and AI concepts into clear, compelling visual communication-and you'll grow your skills and ownership as the company scales.
This role is ideal for an early-career designer with strong fundamentals, great taste, and a desire to learn quickly in a fast-moving startup environment.
What You Will Do
  • Design marketing and brand assets across channels: social, email, ads, web, and product marketing
  • Create visuals for campaigns, launches, and ongoing brand storytelling
  • Produce digital and print-ready materials for sales, partnerships, and customer-facing needs
  • Support landing pages and product marketing pages with strong visual layout and hierarchy
  • Help maintain and apply Matic's brand system across touchpoints
  • Build and use templates to speed up recurring work and keep things consistent
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, and leadership to turn ideas into clear visual designs
  • Take projects from brief to final delivery with guidance and feedback

What You Bring
  • Strong fundamentals in visual design: layout, typography, color, hierarchy, and composition
  • A portfolio showing thoughtful visual or marketing design work (school, internships, or personal projects welcome)
  • Comfort working in Figma and basic familiarity with tools like Photoshop or Illustrator
  • Ability to take feedback, iterate, and learn quickly
  • Good organization and attention to detail
  • Clear communication and a collaborative mindset
  • 0-2 years of experience, or equivalent hands-on/project-based experience

Nice to Have
  • Interest in consumer tech, hardware, robotics, or product-driven companies
  • Basic motion or video skills (After Effects, simple animations, or Lottie)
  • Familiarity with web or CMS tools
  • Internship or freelance experience in marketing, brand, or visual design
  • Excitement about growing into more ownership and responsibility over time

Portfolio (Required)
Please include a portfolio showcasing relevant design work. We're especially interested in projects that demonstrate strong visual taste, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling graphics. Work that shows range across brand, marketing, product visuals, or storytelling is particularly valuable.
Please provide portfolio website password (if applicable)
Compensation
Base $96,000 - $120,000
Actual Compensation will depend on skills, experience and qualifications. Base Salary is one part of the total compensation package. The role is also eligible for equity through the company's discretionary equity program, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision coverage access to a 401(k) plan.
