What are freelance runners?

Freelance runners are entry-level professionals who work on a temporary or per-project basis, usually within the media, film, or television industries. Their main role is to assist with various tasks such as fetching equipment, delivering messages or items, helping set up locations, and supporting the production team with general duties. As freelancers, they are not tied to a single employer and often work on different projects for various companies. This position is a great way to gain experience and foot in the door within creative industries.

What are some common challenges freelance runners face when working on film or television sets?

Freelance runners often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new teams, managing multiple urgent tasks simultaneously, and handling long or irregular work hours. Since each production has its own pace and expectations, runners must be proactive, resourceful, and able to communicate effectively with various departments. Building strong working relationships and maintaining professionalism under pressure can help overcome these challenges and lead to more frequent bookings.
