What is a freelance purchasing professional?

A freelance purchasing professional is an independent contractor who manages the procurement of goods and services for companies on a project or contract basis, instead of being a full-time employee. They are responsible for sourcing suppliers, negotiating prices, ensuring quality, and handling purchase orders. Freelance purchasing specialists often work with multiple clients, offering flexibility and specialized expertise to businesses that may not require a full-time procurement staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance purchasing specialist?

To thrive as a Freelance Purchasing Specialist, you need strong negotiation skills, an understanding of supply chain management, and relevant experience or education in procurement or business. Familiarity with procurement software, inventory management systems, and sometimes certifications like Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) are valuable. Excellent communication, organization, and relationship-building abilities help you manage vendors and adapt to changing client needs. These skills ensure cost-effective purchasing decisions, timely delivery of goods, and client satisfaction in a competitive freelance environment.

What are some common challenges freelance purchasing professionals face when managing multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance purchasing professionals often juggle multiple clients, each with unique processes, priorities, and timelines. This can make it challenging to stay organized and responsive, especially when dealing with urgent requests or conflicting deadlines. Effective communication, time management, and robust record-keeping are essential to ensure all client needs are met and supplier relationships remain strong. Leveraging digital tools for tracking orders and contracts can help streamline workflows and minimize errors.

  • Own the promotional calendar, campaign planning, brand positioning, voice, and visual consistency.
  • Establish and report on marketing KPIs and forward-looking performance targets.
  • Develop growth recommendations based on projected return on marketing investment.
  • Lead go-to-market strategy for new product launches and seasonal programs.
  • Oversee online brand reputation management.
  • Incorporate AI tools into content development, analysis, and marketing workflows.

E-Commerce & Digital Marketing

  • Drive online revenue by improving traffic, conversion, average order value, and repeat purchase rate.

  • Lead email and SMS lifecycle marketing and campaign calendars.
  • Oversee SEO, content, social media, influencer, and affiliate marketing.
  • Identify opportunities to improve website conversion, product pages, and online merchandising.

Retail & Store Marketing

  • Develop marketing strategies for individual stores and our overall retail footprint.
  • Lead in-store promotions, local store marketing, direct mail, and local media initiatives.
  • Partner with Visual Merchandising on signage, window programs, and store presentation.
  • Support new store openings, events, pop-ups, and community partnerships.

Customer Growth, Analytics & Budget

  • Own customer acquisition cost (CAC), lifetime value (LTV), and the relationship between the two.
  • Lead CRM, loyalty, retention, and customer segmentation strategies.
  • Own and manage the marketing budget.
  • Track ROI, CPA, CAC, conversion, attribution, and POS traffic trends.
  • Maintain dashboards and provide leadership with clear reporting on marketing and channel performance.

Team Leadership & Partnerships

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the internal marketing team and interns.
  • Manage agencies, web developers, BPO partners, freelancers, and other external vendors.
  • Oversee creative production, including photographers, videographers, designers, and content creators.
  • Establish clear expectations, budgets, timelines, and performance standards.
  • Collaborate across Retail, Sales, Operations, Product Development, and Customer Experience.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive marketing experience with accountability for revenue.
  • Marketing leadership experience with consumer brands in the $10M–$100M revenue range.
  • CPG experience required.
  • Beauty, skincare, personal care, hair care, or wellness industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading marketing across both e-commerce and physical retail.
  • Experience managing and developing internal teams and directing external agencies.
  • Hands-on familiarity with e-commerce, email/SMS, analytics, and paid media platforms.
  • Current, hands-on experience using AI tools in marketing is required.
  • Amazon marketplace experience is a plus.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, communication, and project management skills.
