Job Description

In close association with the team lead electrical controls engineer, design control panel layouts, schematics, and other required electrical details, and generate bills of material to satisfy requirements, conditions, and codes of assigned contracts.

Qualifications

Perform CAD drafting functions to generate the appropriate drawings for the developed designs and provide leadership and direction to less experienced design/drafting staff.

Review assembled panels for conformance to design and to provide feedback for design improvements.

The candidate must be able to manage fast paced and simultaneously running projects.

Requires ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Attention to detail is imperative.

The successful candidate will have a hands-on role under the direction of a Project Manager and Engineering lead to perform electrical control panel design and CAD drafting for all assigned projects.

Review drawings from suppliers and review drawings of other ABB design personnel for conformance to customer specifications, approved practices, and standards and codes governing specific phases of work.

Work with senior team members to resolve design problems, investigate non-conformances and recommend solutions.

Assemble, check, obtain approval for and distribute contract drawing packages as required by contract details. Interact with related groups as directed by contract instructions to obtain drawing approval, to transmit drawings, etc. in fulfilling specified contract requirements.

  • This position requires a candidate with thorough knowledge of CAD drafting and related practices and an introductory knowledge of and desire to advance his or her electrical design capabilities.
  • This position requires a candidate to have a working knowledge on how to design and draft electrical single-line diagrams, control/operator/starter panel wiring diagrams, electrical loop diagrams, and panel layouts, and to ensure quality of complex designs and in compliance with customer requirements and codes.
  • This position requires the ability to recognize and resolve complex problems, communicate effectively, adapt to changes and select most effective methods of accomplishing tasks.
  • The candidate must be able to manage fast paced and simultaneously running projects.
  • This position requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Providing technical leadership and the ability to influence staff and customers is a plus. Attention to detail is imperative.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or vocational design degree or a combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments.

A minimum of 1 to 3 years of recent and direct experience in:

  • Electrical control panel design
  • Electrical controls design including integration of 460VAC VFDs and other drive systems into control solutions, PLC hardware integration.
  • Drafting using AutoCAD Electric, or similar CAD package, including generation of BOM, interconnect tables, custom reports.
  • Project execution experience.
  • Strong organization and planning skills
  • Strong analytical and excellent communication skills
  • Microsoft Word and Excel software usage
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Bonus skills but not required:

  • ABB drives hardware knowledge
  • ABB AC800M/S800, AC700F/Freelance, AC500 PLC controller and IO hardware knowledge
  • Low voltage power distribution knowledge
