Job description

Caribbean Life Editor

The Caribbean Life Editor is responsible for all content associated with the outlet including the weekly publication, website, email newsletters, social media channels, podcasts, video, and events. The editor will lead the team in creating compelling content, generating original story ideas, breaking news, and driving audience growth and repeat visitors to the website. This role will also work closely with Schneps Mediaโ€™s editorial leadership and citywide editorial teams on collaborative stories, projects, and special sections. The position reports directly to the Chief Content Officer.

Caribbean Life Editor Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day editorial operations of Caribbean Life
  • Support outreach efforts to readers, community leaders, elected officials, organizations, and sources throughout the Caribbean community including attending local events
  • Assign stories and deadlines to writers and contributors
  • Proof all stories in the website CMS, including editing copy and headlines and ensuring SEO best practices are maintained before publication
  • Oversee and assign freelancers to cover assignments, process their copy/photos, and publish content online
  • Build the print publication in collaboration with production using WordPress2Print and Master Page Builder templates
  • Procure copy for columns, opinion pieces, and feature stories and ensure they are published online and in print
  • Procure images and collaborate with designers on photo pages, editorial layouts, and special sections
  • Write stories when time permits
  • Participate in regular meetings with editors across Schneps Media to share story ideas and coordinate story syndication
  • Recruit staff, interns, freelancers, and contributors for the team
  • Review site traffic, analytics, and audience engagement metrics
  • Assist with content development around events and community initiatives
  • Coordinate with the sales team and leadership when needed

Caribbean Life Editor Necessary Skills & Attributes

  • Strong knowledge of the Caribbean American community in New York City
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working for a news organization
  • Knowledge of Wordpress
  • Knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, X and other social media platforms
