What is a freelance pharmaceutical engineer?

A Freelance Pharmaceutical Engineer is a professional who provides engineering services to the pharmaceutical industry on a contract or project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They may work on designing manufacturing processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, developing new drug formulations, or optimizing existing systems for efficiency and safety. Freelance roles allow engineers to work with multiple clients, often remotely or on-site as needed, giving them flexibility in their work schedules and the types of projects they take on.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance pharmaceutical engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Pharmaceutical Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical process knowledge, and typically a relevant degree or professional certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software (such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or process simulation tools) and regulatory compliance systems (like GMP and FDA guidelines) is essential. Strong project management, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help build client trust and manage diverse projects independently. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions in the highly regulated pharmaceutical industry.

What are some common challenges freelance pharmaceutical engineers face when managing multiple client projects?

Freelance pharmaceutical engineers often juggle projects for different clients simultaneously, which can present challenges in balancing varying timelines, regulatory requirements, and communication styles. Staying organized and proactively managing deadlines is essential, as pharmaceutical projects typically involve strict compliance and documentation standards. Additionally, freelancers must be adept at quickly adapting to each client's specific processes and expectations while maintaining consistent quality. Building clear communication channels and setting realistic project scopes can help mitigate these challenges and ensure successful client partnerships.

What is the difference between Freelance Pharmaceutical Engineer vs Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance Specialist?

In contrast, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance Specialists ensure products meet quality standards and regulatory requirements within organizations. Both roles require relevant certifications and industry experience but differ mainly in scope and work environment.

Are freelance pharmaceutical engineers in demand?

Freelance pharmaceutical engineers are in demand due to the ongoing need for expertise in drug development, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance. Their skills are valuable in contract work, consulting, and project-based roles within the pharmaceutical industry, especially as companies seek flexible staffing solutions and specialized knowledge. Strong knowledge of GMP, cGMP, and industry regulations enhances employability in this freelance capacity.

Job description

Company Description

PHM is the leading health media agency in the US, built for the modern healthcare experience. Here, industry depth meets media scale, where data becomes direction, where creativity and storytelling bring truth to life, and where orchestration replaces fragmentation.

Dedicated to making brands discovered, PHM redefines what media can do through data, content, and creativity. Because in modern healthcare, the brands that are found are the ones that lead. And when brands lead, advantage follows. Go deeper. Be found.

Overview

As a key member of the Data Enablement team, you will play a critical role in the design, development, and ongoing evolution of core data products, including our classification engine and supporting data infrastructure. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, data product development, and data governance, with a focus on building scalable, high-quality solutions that power downstream analytics and reporting. You will work hands-on with large, complex datasets to develop and maintain data pipelines, implement classification logic, and ensure data accuracy and consistency across systems.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design, build, and maintenance of data pipelines and workflows supporting the classification engine and other core data products using Databricks and/or Snowflake

  • Develop and implement scalable classification logic and data transformation rules using SQL and/or Python

  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity across datasets through rigorous QA, validation, and monitoring processes

  • Partner closely with Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Media teams to support and evolve data products and underlying data models

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex data issues, identifying root causes and implementing long-term solutions

  • Work within Agile frameworks (Jira) to manage priorities, deliverables, and cross-functional collaboration

Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience working with Databricks and/or Snowflake, or similar modern data warehouse technologies

  • Proficiency in SQL and/or Python for data transformation and analysis

  • Experience working with large, complex datasets and building scalable data solutions

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to data accuracy and quality

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug complex data and system issues

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Ability to think critically about data structures, logic, and system design

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with taxonomy, classification systems, or data governance frameworks

  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Datorama/MCI, Tableau, and Power BI

  • Familiarity with tools such as Alteryx

  • Experience working with media or marketing data (pharmaceutical experience is a plus, but not required)
