What is a freelance NBA writer?

A Freelance NBA writer is a professional who creates content related to the National Basketball Association (NBA) on a flexible, contract basis rather than as a full-time employee. They may write articles, provide analysis, cover games, or produce multimedia content for various publications, websites, or clients. Freelance NBA writers often pitch their own story ideas, manage their own schedules, and work with multiple clients at once. This role requires strong knowledge of basketball, excellent writing skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance NBA writer?

To thrive as a Freelance NBA Writer, you need excellent writing skills, a deep understanding of basketball (especially the NBA), and experience in journalism or content creation. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, SEO tools, and social media management systems is usually required. Strong research abilities, creativity, and the ability to meet tight deadlines are crucial soft skills that set top writers apart. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, accurate, and timely content that resonates with basketball fans and meets the demands of fast-paced sports media.

What are some common challenges freelance NBA writers face when working with multiple clients or publications?

Freelance NBA writers often juggle assignments from several outlets, which can lead to overlapping deadlines and varying editorial expectations. Managing time effectively and tailoring content to each publication's unique style are key challenges. Additionally, staying up-to-date with real-time league developments and building strong relationships with editors can be demanding but are crucial for long-term success. Freelancers should also be prepared for periods of inconsistent workload, especially during the NBA off-season.

Who We Are

UnitedMasters is building a marketplace that connects artists, brands and fans - empowering over 1.5M artists to earn and grow. UnitedMasters has taken the bold step of building a music distribution service that, radically, puts artists first - disrupting the legacy music business by letting up-and-coming artists distribute their music directly to fans through streaming services while maintaining ownership of their master recording rights and up to 100% of royalties. Through the combination of UnitedMasters' music distribution platform and its deep ties to brands, UnitedMasters enables independent artists to grow and earn unlike any other platform.

Its unrivaled monetization opportunities for artists are amplified by Translation, UnitedMasters' in-house creative marketing agency renowned for helping ambitious brands thrive in contemporary culture. In 2022, Translation was awarded the number three spot in Ad Age's Agency A-List and AdWeek's Multicultural Agency of the Year. One year before, Translation was awarded Ad Age's Small Agency of the Year.

We're looking for a versatile Recruiter to support hiring across two distinct businesses: UnitedMasters, a music technology company transforming the music industry, and Translation, a creative advertising agency partnering with some of the world's most recognized brands.

This role is ideal for a recruiter who thrives on variety. One week you may be hiring Software Engineers, Product Managers, and Finance professionals. The next, you could be recruiting Creative Directors, Strategists, Producers, Account leaders, or freelance talent for agency projects.

  • Manage the end-to-end recruiting process across a wide variety of corporate, technical, creative, and business roles.
  • Partner with hiring managers to define hiring strategies, interview plans, and ideal candidate profiles.
  • Build and maintain strong candidate pipelines through sourcing, networking, referrals, and market research.
  • Deliver an exceptional candidate experience from initial outreach through offer acceptance.
  • Manage multiple searches simultaneously while maintaining speed, quality, and communication.

Talent Partnership

  • Act as a strategic advisor to hiring managers throughout the recruiting process.
  • Provide market insights, compensation guidance, and hiring recommendations.
  • Facilitate interview calibration and drive effective hiring decisions.
  • Influence stakeholders to ensure an efficient, high-quality hiring process.

Sourcing & Pipeline Development

  • Proactively source passive talent using LinkedIn Recruiter, networking, referrals, and creative sourcing strategies.
  • Develop diverse talent pipelines for current and future hiring needs.
  • Build relationships with candidates across creative, technical, and business disciplines.

Recruiting Operations

  • Maintain accurate recruiting data within the applicant tracking system.
  • Track recruiting metrics including time-to-fill, pipeline health, and offer acceptance rates.
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance efficiency and candidate experience.
  • Support employer branding initiatives, recruiting events, and talent community engagement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to recruit a mix of corporate, technical, and creative talent.
  • Strong sourcing skills with demonstrated success attracting passive candidates.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing searches in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience using Greenhouse or another ATS.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Data-driven approach to recruiting and process improvement.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 4+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience
  • Proven track record of hiring high-performing talent across multiple functions and levels, including senior-level roles
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ADP, Greenhouse, and Google suite preferred

Salary Hiring Range: $130,000 - $175,000

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of many compensation, benefits and other reward opportunities we provide (e.g. in some cases bonus, stock options, 401(k) match, etc.)

Individual pay rate decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company.  We expect the majority of the candidates who are offered roles at our company to fall healthily throughout the range based on these factors.

The range above is for the expectations as laid out in the job description, however we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted.  If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.

The salary range above is for the NY/CA.  As a company, we have a location based strategy, which means the salary range could be lower or higher than this if the role is hired in another location.
