What does a Freelance Minerals Processing Engineer do?

A Freelance Minerals Processing Engineer specializes in optimizing the extraction and processing of minerals from ores in mining operations, working on a project or contract basis. Their duties often include designing processing systems, troubleshooting plant operations, improving safety and efficiency, and providing technical consultancy. Unlike in-house engineers, freelancers may work with multiple clients and on varied projects, which allows for flexibility and diverse experience. They must stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and industry regulations to provide effective solutions to their clients.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance minerals processing engineers when working on multiple client projects?

Job description

About the Company

Axyde Analytics is seeking a senior-level process engineering and industrial integration professional to help support and operationalize emerging U.S.-aligned critical materials and industrial processing initiatives. This is not a traditional single-plant engineering role. The position sits at the intersection of:

  • Critical minerals
  • Industrial processing
  • Logistics
  • Government programs
  • Refining systems
  • Supply-chain execution
  • Industrial-scale operational integration

Projected Near Term Projects:

  • Graphite processing and logistics
  • Nickel-cobalt precursor concepts
  • Gallium refining and purification pathways
  • Hydrometallurgical systems
  • Industrial material movement
  • Process validation
  • Related industrial capability development efforts

Industrial Focus:

This role is intended for someone who understands how real industrial systems are designed, integrated, commissioned, operated, and scaled. We are not looking for a purely academic profile. We are looking for someone who understands industrial reality.

About the Role

Responsibilities include supporting technical development and operational integration across multiple industrial processing initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Support technical development and operational integration across multiple industrial processing initiatives
  • Coordinate with EPCM firms, engineering partners, operators, vendors, and technical advisors
  • Review and help refine flowsheets, process concepts, and industrial operating assumptions
  • Assist with FEED-stage planning and technical due diligence activities
  • Support process validation, throughput analysis, mass balance review, and operational readiness planning
  • Help evaluate feedstock, refining, purification, precursor, and processing pathways
  • Assist with industrial site evaluation and infrastructure assessment
  • Coordinate technical aspects of logistics and material-handling concepts where relevant
  • Support government-facing technical discussions and proposal activities
  • Identify operational risks, process bottlenecks, and scale-up considerations
  • Help bridge the gap between conceptual strategy and executable industrial reality

Strong candidates may come from:

  • Hydrometallurgical operations
  • Mineral processing
  • Refinery operations
  • Industrial chemical processing
  • SX/EW operations
  • Battery materials
  • Precursor chemistry
  • Metals refining
  • Commissioning/startup leadership
  • Industrial process scale-up environments

Experience supporting government, defense, or strategically sensitive industrial programs is strongly preferred. We are especially interested in candidates who have:

  • Operated real plants
  • Managed industrial throughput
  • Worked through commissioning/startup environments
  • Solved practical operational problems
  • Coordinated across technical and operational disciplines

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of relevant industrial/process engineering experience
  • Experience with large-scale industrial operations or process facilities
  • Strong understanding of industrial process systems and operational integration
  • Ability to operate in fast-moving and ambiguous environments
  • Comfortable working across multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Practical, execution-oriented mindset
  • Strong communication and coordination capabilities

Preferred But Not Required

  • 15+ years of relevant industrial/process engineering experience
  • Experience with critical minerals or metals processing
  • Experience with graphite, nickel, cobalt, gallium, rare earths, or related systems
  • Government contracting or federally supported program experience
  • EPCM coordination experience
  • FEED or pre-FEED project experience
  • Startup/commissioning leadership experience
  • Military or defense-industrial familiarity

Position Structure

This role may initially operate in a consulting, fractional, advisory, or project-based capacity with opportunity to expand over time depending on project activity and funding progression. Location is flexible, though periodic travel to industrial, port, refinery, customer, or government locations may be required. We are building toward trusted operational capability inside strategically important industrial systems. The ideal candidate understands that execution, discipline, and industrial credibility matter more than narrative.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Axyde Analytics is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We consider qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, pregnancy, citizenship status, or any other status protected under applicable federal, state, or local law.

Work Authorization and Eligibility

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Depending on project requirements, candidates may be required to satisfy additional eligibility, background, security, facility-access, export-control, customer, or government-program requirements.

Reasonable Accommodation

Axyde Analytics is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities in the application and employment process, consistent with applicable law.
