What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Magazine Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Magazine Writer, you need strong writing, research, and editing skills, often supported by a background in journalism, communications, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), AP Style, and digital publishing tools is typically required. Self-motivation, adaptability, and the ability to pitch creative ideas help writers stand out in a competitive market. These skills are essential for consistently producing high-quality, engaging content that meets editorial standards and deadlines.

What is a freelance magazine writer?

A freelance magazine writer is an independent professional who writes articles, features, or other content for magazines without being a permanent employee. They pitch story ideas to editors, research topics, conduct interviews, and submit completed pieces according to the magazine’s guidelines. Freelance magazine writers often work for multiple publications at once and are paid per article or assignment. This role offers flexibility and variety, but requires strong self-motivation and networking skills to secure assignments.

What is the difference between Freelance Magazine vs Freelance Journalist?

AspectFreelance MagazineFreelance Journalist
CredentialsPortfolio, writing samples, possibly journalism or media-related certificationsJournalism degree or related certifications, strong writing portfolio
Work EnvironmentMagazines, publishing houses, online media platformsNewsrooms, online outlets, freelance assignments across various media
Employer & Industry UsageMagazines, publishing companies, media outletsNews organizations, online media, independent clients

Freelance Magazine writers focus on creating content specifically for magazines, often with a style suited to print or digital magazine formats. Freelance Journalists have a broader scope, covering news stories, reports, and articles across various media outlets. While both roles require strong writing skills and industry knowledge, Freelance Magazine writers typically specialize in feature or editorial content for magazines, whereas Freelance Journalists may cover a wider range of topics and formats across different platforms.

What are some common challenges freelance magazine writers face when working with multiple editors or publications?

Freelance magazine writers often juggle assignments from different editors, each with their own style preferences, deadlines, and editorial guidelines. Managing these varying expectations requires strong organizational skills and clear communication to ensure each piece meets the specific needs of the publication. Additionally, freelancers may encounter challenges such as negotiating rates, securing timely payments, and maintaining a steady workflow. Building good relationships and being adaptable can help writers navigate these challenges successfully.

Job description

About Us:

Boston magazine is a regional media brand that produces award-winning journalism in print, digital, and social media as well as our area’s best-in-class live and virtual events. From personalities to politics, city life to society, and culture to real estate, our brand sparks and influences the most important local conversations of the day. With a dedication to sumptuous design, in-depth storytelling, and indispensable service—including our Weddings and Home magazines—we help our audience develop a deep, personal connection to their hometown and catapult captivating stories and ideas into the spotlight. In addition to our premium content, including our beloved “Best Of” franchises, we also produce our region’s premier experiences, such as our signature Best Of and Taste events.

Job Description:

This role requires an extensive track record writing and editing longform narrative journalism—magazine features of 4,000 words or more. If that’s not the bulk of your work experience, please don’t apply. We mean it.
Still reading? Then you might be exactly who we’re looking for. Boston magazine is hiring a Senior Editor to join one of the nation’s finest city magazines. In this important leadership role, the Senior Editor will assign and edit well features and front-of-book articles; regularly write deeply reported longform stories; cultivate a stable of freelance writers; and contribute the kind of ideas, energy, and passion that will help our award-winning magazine continue to get even better.
We’re looking for someone with at least 8 years’ experience where longform has been the center of your career, not an occasional assignment, a proven ability to edit and write superior longform narrative magazine features of 4,000 words or more, a sharp eye for magazine stories and storytelling, and a deep knowledge of Boston, its players, and why it’s the greatest city on earth.
In your application, please include links to at least three longform features (4,000+ words) you’ve written or edited, with a brief note on your specific role in each.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, assign, and edit longform magazine features.
  • Regularly contribute to the magazine and website.
  • Oversee and grow a roster of top freelance writers and oversee their work quality.
  • Find, report, and write several longform features each year.
  • Work collaboratively with a small, tight-knit editorial and art team.
  • Produce our weekly longform newsletter.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • At least 8 years of editorial experience in longform writing and editing.
  • Proven ability to edit and write long-form narrative features.
  • A healthy respect for deadlines and working efficiently.
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for Boston (or willingness to learn quickly).
  • Ability to collaborate across the edit team with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain professional relationships inside and outside of the workplace.
  • An admirable work ethic, proven time management skills, and an obsession with producing top-quality work.
  • Team-player (non-negotiable).
  • Sense of humor (also non-negotiable).
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Boston magazine is a remote workplace. However, due to the nature of the work, this position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area, willing to move, or willing to travel frequently at their own expense.

The annual salary for this role is $80,000 - $92,000.

This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.

It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.

EEO Statement: At Boston Globe Media, our mission is to empower, connect, and convene our communities with independent, trusted journalism and storytelling. We know a critical part of achieving this is by having a workforce that is representative of the communities we serve. Boston Globe Media is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes candidates and colleagues of all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and skills.
