While both roles require strong graphic design skills, Library Graphic Designers emphasize branding and informational visuals, whereas Book Designers concentrate on book aesthetics and readability.

How do freelance library graphic designers typically collaborate with library staff and other stakeholders on projects?

Freelance library graphic designers often work closely with librarians, marketing teams, and event coordinators to understand the library's branding, goals, and audience. Communication usually happens through regular virtual meetings, email updates, and shared project management tools. Designers are expected to interpret feedback, revise materials such as posters, brochures, and digital graphics, and ensure that all visuals support the library's mission and accessibility standards. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to incorporate diverse input are essential for delivering successful design projects.

What is freelance library graphic design?

Freelance library graphic design involves creating visual materials for libraries on a project or contract basis. Designers in this field may work on promotional posters, event flyers, digital graphics for social media, signage, logos, and other branding elements to help libraries communicate effectively with their communities. Projects can range from one-time assignments to ongoing collaborations, and freelancers work independently rather than as full-time staff. This role requires both creative skills and an understanding of library services and audiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Library Graphic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Library Graphic Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in typography and layout, and a portfolio demonstrating relevant work, often supported by a degree or coursework in graphic design. Expertise with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital asset management systems are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help freelancers understand client needs and deliver engaging, library-specific visuals. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality, tailored graphics that support library branding and outreach efforts.

Job description

Weโ€™re looking for a talented Freelance Graphic Designer to support our marketing team on an as-needed basis. This role is ideal for a versatile designer who can move seamlessly between B2B and B2C creative needs, delivering polished, on-brand assets that help drive awareness, growth, and engagement.

Details:

  • Freelance / contractor role
  • Remote (U.S.-based preferred)
  • Approximately 6-8 hours per week, with potential for ongoing work
  • Hours may vary month to month based on business needs
  • Compensation based on experience, skills, and geographic location.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Design marketing assets across email, social, web, and paid campaigns
  • Create print-ready collateral for hotel partners (front desk signage, in-room materials, brochures, welcome pieces, etc.)
  • Elevate the visual quality of lifecycle emails and member communications
  • Develop clean, compelling sales and partner-facing materials (decks, one-pagers, leave-behinds)
  • Collaborate with marketing to translate ideas into sharp, effective visuals
  • Bring a point of view on layout, typography, and imagery

What You Bring

  • 3โ€“6+ years of graphic design experience (freelance or in-house)
  • A portfolio that spans both digital and print work
  • Strong typography and layout skills
  • Experience preparing files for print production
  • Experience designing for digital channels (email, web, social, paid ads)
  • Comfort working within a brandโ€”but also pushing it forward
  • Ability to work independently and hit deadlines
  • Bonus: experience in travel, hospitality, or lifestyle brands

Tools & Workflow

  • Figma, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Canva (for scalable internal templates)
  • Familiarity with email design best practices (Mailchimp a plus)
  • Comfort prepping and handing off files for print vendors

How We Work

  • Remote, collaborative, and low-ego
  • Clear direction, but not over-prescribed
  • We value good instincts and thoughtful opinions
  • We move fast, but not sloppily

What Success Looks Like

  • Printed materials feel premiumโ€”something a guest might actually pick up (and not toss)
  • Sales materials feel sharper and help close deals faster
  • The brand feels tighter, more intentional across every touchpoint
  • The team sees a design and says, โ€œThis feels like Stash.โ€
