Job description

STV is seeking a Buildings / Facilities Inspector to join our CEI department at our Gainesville, VA office.
The Buildings or Facilities Inspector is responsible for inspecting new construction, renovation projects, existing facilities, and building systems to verify compliance with contract documents, building codes, safety regulations, maintenance standards, and owner requirements. The Inspector documents observations, identifies deficiencies, monitors corrective actions, and supports facility owners in maintaining safe, functional, and code-compliant buildings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Inspection and Compliance
  • Conduct inspections of commercial, institutional, industrial, and public facilities.
  • Verify compliance with applicable building codes, fire codes, accessibility requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Review construction activities for conformance with approved plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Inspect structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and life-safety systems.
  • Monitor contractor work quality and workmanship.

Documentation and Reporting
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports.
  • Document deficiencies, non-conforming work, and maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain photographic records of inspection findings.
  • Track corrective actions through completion.
  • Maintain inspection logs and project records.

Facility Assessments
  • Perform condition assessments of buildings and infrastructure.
  • Evaluate building envelope components including roofs, walls, windows, and doors.
  • Assess HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, elevators, and life-safety systems.
  • Identify deferred maintenance and capital improvement needs.
  • Assist in developing repair and replacement recommendations.

Coordination
  • Coordinate with facility owners, contractors, maintenance personnel, and project managers.
  • Participate in project meetings and site walkthroughs.
  • Assist with occupancy inspections and project closeout activities.
  • Review contractor submittals and testing documentation as assigned.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
  • Monitor adherence to site safety requirements.
  • Report unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Verify compliance with OSHA and facility-specific safety policies.
  • Support emergency preparedness and facility resilience initiatives.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Building Technology, Facilities Management, or related field preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in building inspection, facilities management, construction inspection, or building maintenance.
  • Experience with commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, government, or industrial facilities preferred.

Knowledge
  • Building codes (IBC, IFC, IMC, IPC, NEC).
  • ADA Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Construction methods and materials.
  • Facility maintenance practices.
  • Building systems and building envelope components.
  • Quality assurance and quality control practices.

Preferred Certifications
One or more of the following:
