Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Fairmont State University is a comprehensive, student-centered, state-supported institution offering dozens of certificate and degree programs at the associate, bachelor, and master levels via 40+ degree programs and over 150 programs of study. The University sits on a charming hilltop campus in Fairmont, West Virginia, a small, friendly city surrounded by nature with mountain resorts and major cities like Charleston, Pittsburgh and Columbus all within a 2-3 hour drive.

Job Duties:
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled and meet all designated class periods.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, lectures, and assignments.
  • Engage students in active learning and facilitate meaningful class discussions.
  • Assess student learning through examinations, quizzes, and other assignments.
  • Provide timely feedback to students and maintain records of their progress.
  • Maintain regular office hours for student consultation and support.
  • Submit assessment reporting data and materials and participate in departmental assessment activities, as required by supervisor.
  • Post syllabus and maintain gradebook in Blackboard or other official online course delivery platform.

Minimum Expectations
Minimum Required Education
  • A master's degree or higher in a program of study in the discipline in which they may be hired to teach is required and prior teaching experience is preferred. The degree must be from a regionally or nationally accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
  • Adjunct faculty teaching in graduate programs should hold the terminal degree determined by the discipline and have a record of research, scholarship or achievement appropriate for the graduate program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level is desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the subject area of the course(s) to be taught.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and student-centered learning.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Blackboard experience preferred.

Special Conditions
  • Part-time faculty are appointed only for the current semester in which they are teaching, and no guarantees are made for continuing employment.
  • Due to Affordable Care Act provisions, adjunct employees may not work for or hold an adjunct assignment more than nine (9) credit hours per semester TOTAL, or 27 hours per week. The hours can be divided between Fairmont State and another WV public institution/agency, but the total credit hours must still equal nine or fewer or 27 hpw or fewer. This stipulation is due to Affordable Care Act requirements and costs for the institutions.
