What is freelance gaming?

Freelance gaming refers to working independently in the gaming industry, often taking on short-term projects or tasks for various clients rather than being employed by a single company. Freelancers in gaming can include game testers, content creators, streamers, artists, writers, or developers who offer their skills to studios, publishers, or other clients. They typically set their own schedules, choose their projects, and manage their business operations independently. This flexibility allows them to work on diverse projects and potentially earn income from multiple sources, but it also comes with challenges like inconsistent income and the need for self-promotion.

How do freelance gaming professionals typically find and secure new projects or clients?

Freelance gaming professionals often find new projects through online platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or specialized gaming job boards. Networking within gaming communities, attending industry events, and building a strong online portfolio also play a crucial role in attracting clients. Most freelancers work remotely and manage multiple projects, requiring strong organizational and communication skills to maintain client relationships and meet deadlines. Establishing a reputation for reliability and quality work can lead to repeat business and referrals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as C# or C++), a solid understanding of game design principles, and a portfolio showcasing completed projects. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems such as Git is essential, along with relevant certifications or coursework. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and communication skills help you stand out when collaborating remotely with clients or teams. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality games on deadline, adapt to client needs, and build a sustainable freelance career.

Department: Field Sales
Employment Type: Freelance
Location: Portland, OR
Compensation: $30.00 - $33.00 / hour
Description
Big-name prestige beauty is coming to your market - and we're bringing in the best freelance Brand Advisors to make it unforgettable. This is a short, high-impact event project on set dates:
  • September 18th
  • September 19th

You show up, own the floor, hit the number, and move on to your next gig. Perfect for established beauty pros who love the buzz of a live event.
These events will take place at Ulta 493 Beaverton and Ulta 188 Beaverton.
What you'll be doing:
  • Turning up the energy and driving sales toward big event goals
  • Running the event playbook - GWPs, TOAs, and the star focus of each activation - like a pro
  • Making every client feel like the event was built for them
  • Getting the whole store team hyped and selling right alongside you
  • Repping top national beauty brands and making them shine

You'll crush this if you:
  • Know prestige beauty and have the sales numbers to prove it
  • Live for beauty events and know how to create a moment on the floor
  • Run your own game - give you a goal and you'll find the way there
  • Can lock in for the full set of dates above
  • Have reliable transportation to the retailer locations

The good stuff:
  • Independent contractor (1099) project - you invoice, you handle your own taxes, you stay your own boss
  • $200 per event day ($33/hour), paid when the project wraps
  • You'll get the brief and the brand materials - how you win the day is all you
