What is a freelance founding product designer?

A Freelance Founding Product Designer is an independent professional who collaborates with early-stage startups or new ventures to design the initial version of their product. This role combines product vision, user experience, and interface design to help shape the product’s direction from the ground up. As a freelancer, they typically work on a contract basis rather than as a full-time employee and often contribute strategic input, user research, prototyping, and design systems. Their work is crucial in laying the foundation for a product's look, feel, and functionality during its critical early stages.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance founding product designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Founding Product Designer, you need a strong background in user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and product strategy, often supported by a portfolio showcasing end-to-end product design work. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with prototyping and collaboration platforms, is essential. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills are crucial for navigating dynamic startup environments and collaborating remotely with diverse teams. These abilities ensure you can drive innovative product development while aligning design solutions with both user needs and business goals.

How does a freelance founding product designer typically collaborate with early-stage startups and other team members?

As a Freelance Founding Product Designer, you often work closely with startup founders, engineers, and sometimes marketing leads to define and iterate on the product’s user experience and visual direction. Since early-stage teams are usually small, you may be involved in everything from user research and wireframing to creating high-fidelity prototypes and collaborating on product strategy. This role requires proactive communication, flexibility, and the ability to provide design leadership while adapting to rapidly changing priorities. Regular check-ins, design reviews, and collaborative workshops are common practices to ensure alignment and progress.

Key responsibilities

  • Design the complete product experience stack, including onboarding flows and AI interaction interfaces.

  • Set and maintain high standards for user experience, ensuring interfaces are intuitive, beautiful, and handle complex interactions seamlessly.

Job description

San Francisco • Full-time • In-person
About Solidroad
Building something great is addictive. It's like discovering your favorite TV show mid-season, except you're helping write the next episode. It's like unboxing a new gadget, except you're the one designing it. You shape how it feels, how it works, and how people react when they use it.
At Solidroad we're solving a big, messy, exciting problem: how do you scale customer support without losing what makes humans amazing? Warmth, empathy, intuition. We're using AI, generative tech, and real-time simulations to make this happen. It's ambitious, difficult, and genuinely new.
About the role
We're looking for a senior designer who sees this role as more than just a job. It should feel like signing up for a job and a hobby. Or a job and a triathlon. Or a job and an advanced art course. You'll shape our design decisions, own major parts of our product experience, mentor your teammates, and push yourself in ways you might not expect. It'll stretch your skills and fill your life in a deeply rewarding way. You'll craft impactful designs (product interfaces, brand systems, marketing assets; it's all on the table), and make critical decisions about user experience, visual direction, and product feel. There will be challenging moments, but also regular moments of genuine "wow, we built that" pride.
What you'll actually do day-to-day
  • Design the Complete Product Experience Stack
Architect and build cohesive design systems spanning our entire product, from initial onboarding flows to complex AI interaction interfaces. You'll create designs that handle thousands of customer conversations daily, ensuring every touchpoint feels intentional, polished, and human.
  • Shape Brand Evolution Across All Touchpoints
Own the visual evolution of our website, marketing assets, pitch decks, and product UI. You'll build scalable design systems that maintain consistency while knowing exactly when to surprise and delight users throughout their journey.
  • Drive Exceptional User Experience Standards
Set the design standard for intuitive, beautiful interfaces that make AI feel approachable and powerful. You'll ensure our experiences handle complex multimodal interactions seamlessly, mentoring others to achieve the same standard of craft and attention to detail.

Our Team & Culture
We're a small, focused group working full-time in our San Francisco office. We're here five days a week because building something ambitious means collaborating closely, solving problems together, sharing ideas spontaneously, and occasionally challenging each other to padel matches, cold plunges, or karaoke evenings. We're intentional about creating a culture that's mature, supportive, and fun. You'll be joining experienced founders who've done this before, alongside a tight-knit team genuinely excited about building something impactful.
We hope you
  • Have at least 4 years of design experience, ideally at a startup (Series A to C), where you've helped ship complex, customer-facing products that real people love using.
  • Bring strong design leadership, including experience mentoring other designers, leading design decisions, or owning significant product areas from concept to launch.
  • Have deep expertise in modern design tools, design systems, or AI/tech product design-bonus points if you've worked on notable or challenging projects we can explore together.

The good, the bad, and the honest truth
The highs here are incredibly high, direct collaboration with founders who've done this before, significant ownership, and a product you'll feel deeply proud of. The lows are that you'll need to move fast, navigate ambiguity, and sometimes tackle tough design problems solo. But the reality is that startups are a bit like a sport or an instrument: you invest in it not just because you have to, but because you genuinely want to be better tomorrow than you are today.
If that sounds exciting, don't second-guess yourself. Get in touch. Send us something you've designed that you're proud of (portfolio, case studies, anything goes) and a short note about who you are and why this feels right to you. We value enthusiasm, ambition, and curiosity just as much as your design experience.
