What is a Freelance Founding Product Designer?

A Freelance Founding Product Designer is an independent professional who collaborates with early-stage startups or new ventures to design the initial version of their product. This role combines product vision, user experience, and interface design to help shape the product’s direction from the ground up. As a freelancer, they typically work on a contract basis rather than as a full-time employee and often contribute strategic input, user research, prototyping, and design systems. Their work is crucial in laying the foundation for a product's look, feel, and functionality during its critical early stages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Founding Product Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Founding Product Designer, you need a strong background in user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and product strategy, often supported by a portfolio showcasing end-to-end product design work. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with prototyping and collaboration platforms, is essential. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills are crucial for navigating dynamic startup environments and collaborating remotely with diverse teams. These abilities ensure you can drive innovative product development while aligning design solutions with both user needs and business goals.

How does a Freelance Founding Product Designer typically collaborate with early-stage startups and other team members?

As a Freelance Founding Product Designer, you often work closely with startup founders, engineers, and sometimes marketing leads to define and iterate on the product’s user experience and visual direction. Since early-stage teams are usually small, you may be involved in everything from user research and wireframing to creating high-fidelity prototypes and collaborating on product strategy. This role requires proactive communication, flexibility, and the ability to provide design leadership while adapting to rapidly changing priorities. Regular check-ins, design reviews, and collaborative workshops are common practices to ensure alignment and progress.

Job description

About Clark
Clark is building the trust infrastructure for the AI economy.
We're starting with audit and accounting workflows-high-trust environments where reliability, accuracy, and security matter as much as productivity. Our platform helps firms automate complex workflows, deploy AI safely, and modernize how audit teams operate.
The Role
We are hiring a Founding Product Designer to define how customers experience Clark.
This is a product design role focused on turning complex AI workflows into intuitive, trustworthy software. You'll work closely with Engineering, Product, Audit Engineers, and customers to understand how professionals work today and design the interfaces, workflows, and systems that make AI feel reliable in high-stakes environments.
As one of the first designers at Clark, you'll have significant ownership over our product experience-from early concepts and user research through polished production designs. You'll help establish our design language, influence product direction, and shape how customers interact with AI every day.
Why This Role Matters
Clark is building software for professionals performing high-trust work.
Our users need to understand what the system is doing, why it's doing it, and where their judgment matters. Great product design isn't about making software look good-it's about making complex AI workflows feel trustworthy, fast, and intuitive.
The Founding Product Designer will help define how customers experience Clark, ensuring our products are not only powerful but approachable, transparent, and delightful to use.
What You'll Do
  • Design intuitive end-to-end product experiences across Clark's core platform
  • Partner closely with Engineering, Product, Audit Engineers, and customers to understand workflows and translate them into thoughtful product experiences
  • Own the design process from discovery and wireframes through high-fidelity mockups and production-ready specifications
  • Create intuitive workflows for AI-powered audit and accounting products
  • Conduct user research, gather feedback, and iterate quickly based on customer insights
  • Build and evolve Clark's design system, interaction patterns, and visual language
  • Design for clarity, trust, accessibility, and usability across complex enterprise workflows
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure a high-quality implementation of product designs
  • Help establish design best practices and raise the quality bar across the organization

Who You Are
  • 3+ years of experience designing modern software products
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional product thinking, interaction design, and visual design
  • Expert in Figma and modern product design workflows
  • Experience designing complex web applications or enterprise software
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to simplify complex user workflows
  • Comfortable collaborating closely with engineers throughout implementation
  • High ownership with the ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments
  • Excellent communication skills and strong product intuition
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in crafting products users love

Bonus
  • Experience designing AI-native or agentic products
  • Experience building enterprise workflow software or productivity tools
  • Experience designing for highly regulated or trust-sensitive industries
  • Experience creating and maintaining scalable design systems
  • Experience conducting customer research and usability testing
  • Experience at an early-stage startup
