What is a freelance experiential designer?

A Freelance Experiential Designer is a creative professional who specializes in designing immersive experiences—such as events, installations, or branded environments—on a contract or project basis rather than as a full-time employee. Their role typically involves conceptualizing, planning, and executing physical and digital experiences that engage audiences and communicate a brand's message. Freelance experiential designers collaborate with clients, vendors, and other creatives to ensure each project is unique, impactful, and aligns with the client's objectives. They may work on events like product launches, pop-up shops, exhibitions, or interactive installations. Their work requires a strong combination of creativity, project management skills, and technical knowledge.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance experiential designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Experiential Designer, you need expertise in spatial design, branding, and project management, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with software like Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD tools, as well as a strong design portfolio, is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and excellent client communication skills help you deliver memorable experiences and build strong client relationships. These skills are crucial for creating impactful, immersive environments that meet client objectives and ensure repeat business in a competitive field.

What challenges do freelance experiential designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Freelance Experiential Designers often juggle several projects at once, which can lead to challenges in time management, client communication, and resource allocation. Balancing creative demands with practical constraints like budgets and timelines requires strong organizational skills. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in collaborating with vendors, fabricators, and clients to ensure smooth project execution and maintain quality across all deliverables. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear communication can help mitigate these challenges and lead to successful project outcomes.

Who are we?
MATTE is a 360° full-service creative studio at the convergence of hype, storytelling and design. We bring people together to inspire new ways of engaging, to provoke long term progress, and to entertain audiences around the world, while helping forward-thinking brands and institutions nimbly and truly do the same. Our studio capabilities range from strategic ideation and insights, creative development, branding and identity, experiential, web design and development, campaigns and content creation, all the way through full-scale production and execution.
About this role:
The Executive Producer, Experiential Production is a senior leadership role responsible for owning the end-to-end production of MATTE's experiential work. This role sets the standard for creative execution, operational excellence, and financial rigor across all experiential projects. The Executive Producer is a strategic partner to Creative, Client Services, and Finance, while also serving as a leader and mentor to the Experiential Production team.
This role is equal parts creative steward, operational leader, and business owner: accountable for delivery, margin, team development, and the continued evolution of MATTE's experiential capabilities.
Experiential Leadership & Delivery
  • Own the full lifecycle of experiential productions: from concept through execution, installation, and strike.
  • Oversee large-scale live events, immersive environments, installations, pop-ups, and cultural activations.
  • Ensure creative intent is preserved while delivering work that is operationally sound, safe, and scalable.
  • Act as the senior production voice in creative development, identifying feasibility, risk, and opportunity early.
Strategic Partnership & Client Leadership
  • Serve as a senior client-facing leader, building trust through expertise, transparency, and executional excellence.
  • Partner closely with Client Services to scope projects accurately and set clear expectations.
  • Lead high-level client conversations around budgets, timelines, production approach, and risk mitigation.
  • Contribute to new business efforts, including pitches, RFPs, and experiential visioning.
Financial & Operational Ownership
  • Own experiential budgets, schedules, and scopes, ensuring projects deliver against financial targets and margins.
  • Lead cost modeling, vendor negotiations, and production resourcing strategies.
  • Partner with Finance on forecasting, actualization, billing, and post-mortems.
  • Implement and refine production processes, templates, and best practices across experiential work.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, manage, and mentor the Experiential Production team (Producers, Senior Producers, Production Coordinators).
  • Set clear standards for performance, accountability, and growth.
  • Build and maintain a best-in-class freelance and vendor network.
Risk, Safety & Compliance
  • Own production risk assessment, safety planning, and permitting strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, union requirements, insurance, and local regulations.
  • Lead crisis management and on-site decision-making when challenges arise.
Qualifications
  • 12+ years of experiential production experience, with senior leadership experience in an agency or production environment.
  • Proven track record delivering complex, high-profile experiential projects.
  • Deep understanding of live event production, fabrication, scenic, technical production, and logistics.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience owning large-scale budgets and margins.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and client management skills.
  • Calm, decisive presence under pressure with strong problem-solving instincts.
  • NYC-based with flexibility for travel and on-site production work.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working with fashion, luxury, lifestyle, music, or cultural brands.
  • Background collaborating closely with Creative Directors and Designers.
  • Familiarity with large-scale installations, immersive environments, and multi-day events.
  • Experience building and scaling production teams.

Compensation: $170,00-190,000/year
Benefits include:
  • Full Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
  • 401k with a 4% company contribution max match
  • Fully covered yearly Citibike membership
