What are freelance engineers?

Freelance engineers are independent professionals who offer engineering services on a contract or project basis, rather than working as full-time employees for a single company. They may provide expertise in areas such as software, mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering, working with multiple clients to solve technical problems, design systems, or develop products. Freelance engineers often set their own schedules, manage their workload, and negotiate their rates, allowing for greater flexibility and autonomy. However, they are also responsible for finding clients, managing business operations, and keeping their skills up to date.

Is 40 too late to be an engineer?

A freelance engineer can start at any age, including 40, as the profession values skills, experience, and continuous learning. Many successful engineers transition careers or update their skills through certifications and training at any age, making 40 not too late to pursue engineering work.

What is the difference between Freelance Engineer vs Contract Engineer?

AspectFreelance EngineerContract Engineer

Employer & Industry UsageUsed across various industries; self-employed or through platformsEmployed by companies or agencies for project-based work in engineering sectors

In summary, Freelance Engineers operate independently, often handling multiple clients, while Contract Engineers work on specific projects for a single employer under contractual terms. Both roles require engineering credentials but differ mainly in work setup and employment structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Engineer, you need strong technical engineering expertise in your specialization, a relevant degree or certification, and a demonstrated portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB), project management tools, and remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you attract clients, clarify project needs, and meet deadlines. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality work independently and ensuring sustained client satisfaction in a competitive freelance market.

How do freelance engineers typically manage client relationships and project expectations?

Freelance engineers often juggle multiple clients, making clear communication and expectation-setting essential. This means discussing project scope, deliverables, timelines, and rates upfront, and providing regular updates to clients throughout the project. Many freelance engineers use project management tools, contracts, and milestone check-ins to stay organized and ensure everyone is on the same page. Building trust through reliability and transparency can lead to repeat business and referrals, which are important for career growth in freelance engineering.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior engineering roles in fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, or aerospace engineering can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities. High earnings often involve bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in technology or energy sectors.

Can an engineer be a freelancer?

Yes, engineers can work as freelancers by offering their skills independently to clients on a project basis. Freelance engineering often requires strong technical expertise, relevant certifications, and the ability to manage projects and communicate effectively remotely.

What are the top 5 freelancing jobs?

For freelance engineers, common top jobs include software development, civil engineering consulting, electrical engineering design, mechanical engineering projects, and systems engineering. These roles often require specialized skills, proficiency with relevant tools, and the ability to work independently on project-based assignments.

Job description

CONTRACT RECRUITMENT TEAM MANAGER | HOUSTON, TEXAS

Renewable Energy & Grid Infrastructure Recruitment

Hunter Philips is expanding into North America.

Following significant international growth across Europe, APAC and the UK, we are now launching our US contract and freelance division with Houston as a key strategic hub.

To support that growth, we are looking to meet an experienced contract recruitment leader capable of helping build and scale a high-performing US business from the ground up.

This is not a corporate management role hidden inside layers of process.

This is an opportunity to build something meaningful.

THE BUSINESS

Hunter Philips is a specialist renewable energy and grid infrastructure and recruitment business operating globally across:

  • Battery Storage
  • High Voltage Transmission & Distribution
  • Solar
  • Data Centers
  • Wind

We support some of the world’s leading energy businesses across the full project lifecycle. We already have frameworks in place with some of the largest energy companies in the world – OEMs, Utilities, Developers, EPCs, Investors and Asset Managers.

Our contract division has rapidly become one of the fastest growing areas of the business, supporting projects across 31 countries with specialist contractors including:

  • Commissioning Engineers
  • HVDC specialists
  • Construction & Site Teams
  • Grid Infrastructure professionals
  • Senior Authorised Persons

Now we are taking that model into North America.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This role will report directly into Adam Standley, Managing Director of Hunter Philips’ contract division. Adam has almost 20 years of experience of growing high performing and highly profitable contract recruitment businesses globally.

You will also work closely with Hunter Philips Founder, Philip Cottam, who has over 20 years of energy recruitment experience, with an enviable global network of executives across the industry.

Phil is currently in Houston evaluating office locations and infrastructure for our North American expansion.

The successful individual will play a major role in shaping and growing our US contract business from day one.

This is a genuine build opportunity:

  • Build and lead a US contract recruitment team
  • Develop new client relationships across North America
  • Leverage an existing global client base already active in US energy markets
  • Establish delivery capability across renewables and grid infrastructure
  • Help define the operational structure, culture and strategy of the US business
  • Create a scalable division with significant long-term earning potential

We are not looking for someone to “maintain a desk”.

We are looking for someone capable of building a market-leading business unit.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We would be interested in speaking with individuals who have:

  • Strong experience within contract/freelance recruitment
  • A proven billing background
  • Experience building teams, markets or new business units
  • A network within energy, infrastructure, engineering or technical markets
  • Entrepreneurial mentality and high standards
  • The ability to operate with autonomy and pace
  • A desire to build something substantial rather than simply work within an existing structure

Renewable energy recruitment experience is advantageous but not essential for the right individual.

Mindset, commerciality and leadership capability matter more.

WHY HUNTER PHILIPS?

We are intentionally building a different type of recruitment business.

Our model combines:

  • Deep market specialisation
  • International reach
  • High-performance culture
  • Significant investment in technology and infrastructure
  • Strong operational leadership
  • A meritocratic environment where high performers are genuinely rewarded

We already operate internationally across the UK, Europe, APAC and Australia, with continued global expansion planned.

The business has experienced rapid year-on-year growth and the US expansion represents one of the most important strategic projects in our next phase.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

  • Highly competitive compensation and commission structure
  • Significant long-term growth opportunity
  • Direct exposure to senior leadership
  • International travel and conference attendance
  • Autonomy to build and shape a business
  • World-class recruitment technology stack
  • High-performance but supportive culture
  • Clear progression pathway into senior leadership
  • The ability to gain shares in the global business

MEET US IN HOUSTON

Hunter Philips Founder, Philip Cottam, will be attending CLEANPOWER in Houston and will also be spending time in the city over the coming two weeks finalising plans for the US expansion. He will be there between 26th May 2026 and 6th June 2026 when he will be able to meet in person.

During that time, we would be keen to meet high-calibre recruitment professionals interested in being part of this journey from the beginning.

By August 2026 we’ll be there and looking to open a physical office shortly after.

Confidential conversations welcomed.

Please email adam.standley@hunterphilips.com to register your interest or message Adam Standley or Philip Cottam on LinkedIn to arrange a chat.
