What is a freelance data platform engineer?

A Freelance Data Platform Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains data infrastructure and platforms on a project or contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They work with clients to develop scalable and efficient data solutions, such as data warehouses, ETL pipelines, and cloud-based data systems. Their responsibilities often include integrating various data sources, ensuring data quality, and optimizing data workflows to support analytics and business intelligence. Freelance Data Platform Engineers typically have expertise in databases, cloud services, programming, and data architecture. They offer flexibility and specialized skills to organizations that need temporary or project-based support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance data platform engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Data Platform Engineer, you need strong skills in data architecture, ETL processes, and cloud platform management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, Spark, AWS, Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer are highly valuable. Effective client communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you stand out, especially when coordinating independently with multiple stakeholders. These competencies ensure you can design scalable solutions, deliver projects efficiently, and build strong client relationships in a dynamic freelance environment.

How do freelance data platform engineers typically manage collaboration with clients and remote teams?

Freelance Data Platform Engineers often collaborate with clients and distributed teams using project management tools, version control systems, and regular virtual meetings. Clear communication is essential for aligning on data requirements, setting expectations, and providing progress updates. It's common to work asynchronously, so documenting work and maintaining transparent workflows help ensure smooth handoffs. Building trust and reliability is key to fostering long-term client relationships in a freelance setting.

Senior Data Platform Engineer – Remote

Salary: $200,000–$240,000 annually
Work Type: Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Defense Technology / AI / Data Infrastructure

Next Chapter Job Placement is recruiting for a Senior Data Platform Engineer opportunity with a fast-growing defense technology company developing advanced maritime systems and AI-powered perception technology.

This is a highly technical, hands-on role for an experienced engineer who can architect and build a high-throughput data platform from the ground up. You'll have significant ownership over the infrastructure used to process, organize, validate and deliver large-scale multi-sensor datasets used by machine learning and perception teams.

What You'll Do

• Architect and build high-throughput data pipelines for large-scale sensor datasets
• Develop post-processing pipelines that align, resample and calibrate multi-sensor data
• Build backfill and reprocessing frameworks for filters, synchronization changes, label corrections and metadata enrichment
• Develop data lineage and versioning systems that ensure experiment reproducibility
• Build APIs and SDKs for dataset discovery and access
• Develop data-quality metrics, dashboards, alerts and automated validation processes
• Optimize data storage using columnar formats, compression, chunking, sharding and prefetching strategies
• Develop tooling and pre-labeling workflows supporting machine-learning and perception teams
• Deploy and operate production data pipelines in cloud environments
• Take significant ownership of architecture and technical decisions in a fast-moving startup environment

What We're Looking For

• Approximately 5–8+ years of relevant software/data engineering experience
• Strong experience architecting high-throughput data pipelines and data platforms
• Demonstrated ability to design and build data infrastructure from the ground up
• Strong Python development skills
• Experience with PyArrow, Polars, Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, or similar data-processing technologies
• Strong cloud-platform experience, preferably AWS
• Proven experience deploying production data pipelines to the cloud
• Experience with at least one additional language such as Go, Rust or TypeScript
• Experience with data lineage, versioning and reproducibility
• Experience designing backfill/reprocessing systems and data-quality instrumentation
• Ability to work independently with minimal direction in an early-stage environment
• Strong ownership mentality and ability to take projects from architecture through production

Highly Desirable Experience

• Previous startup or greenfield engineering experience
• Dataset-as-a-product ownership
• Full-stack or generalist engineering capabilities
• Experience supporting machine-learning or perception teams
• Experience with sensor, telemetry, audio/sonar, video or geospatial datasets
• Experience with time synchronization across multiple data sources

Additional Requirement

U.S. citizenship is required for this position

Compensation & Benefits

$200,000–$240,000 annual base salary
• Long-term equity incentive program
• 401(k)
• Flexible PTO
• Paid holidays
• Additional company benefits
