Unlike full-time employees, freelancers have the flexibility to choose projects, set their own schedules, and work remotely. They may collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and engineers to ensure seamless data flow. Freelance Data Engineers need strong technical skills in SQL, Python, Spark, and cloud services like AWS, GCP, or Azure.

What types of projects and clients can a freelance data engineer expect to work with?

Freelance Data Engineers often work on diverse projects ranging from building custom data pipelines and automating workflows to migrating databases or developing data integration solutions for businesses of all sizes. Clients can include startups looking to build new data infrastructure, e-commerce companies seeking analytics solutions, or established enterprises aiming to modernize their data systems. Most projects require close collaboration with data scientists, analysts, or software engineering teams, and the scope can vary from short-term assignments to ongoing support. Freelancing provides flexibility to choose projects that match your expertise and interests, as well as opportunities to gain experience across multiple industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance data engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills (in languages like Python or Scala), in-depth knowledge of data modeling and ETL processes, and a solid background in databases and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, SQL, AWS, or Google Cloud, as well as relevant certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics, is highly beneficial. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with clients and adapt to changing project requirements. These abilities are crucial for efficiently delivering tailored data solutions and building a reputable freelance business.

AI Factory Fiber Cabling Engineer

Job Type: Contract / Project-Based
Location: Colorado – Onsite
Duration: 3–6 months, with potential for extension or freelance/project-based engagement
Expected Start: Late October / Early November 2026

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Fiber Cabling Engineer / Infrastructure Deployment Specialist to support a large-scale AI Factory / GPU cluster deployment in Colorado.

The project involves deployment of an approximately 20,000-GPU AI computing environment with approximately 100,000 fiber-optic cable runs across a highly dense data center/AI cluster environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience designing, deploying, managing, testing, and validating high-density fiber infrastructure in large-scale data centers, hyperscale environments, HPC clusters, or similar mission-critical facilities.

This is a field-focused infrastructure role requiring strong technical knowledge of fiber cabling, deployment coordination, testing, quality control, documentation, and commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and support deployment of high-density fiber-optic cabling.
  • Coordinate installation of approximately 100,000 fiber runs across the facility.
  • Develop and maintain fiber layouts, pathways, rack elevations, cable schedules, labeling standards, and connectivity documentation.
  • Coordinate with data center, network, electrical, construction, and AI infrastructure teams.
  • Manage fiber routing, pathways, patch panels, fiber distribution frames, breakout assemblies, and high-density connectivity.
  • Validate fiber connectivity, polarity, labeling, routing, termination, and installation quality.
  • Perform or coordinate fiber testing, including OTDR, insertion loss, and optical power testing.
  • Troubleshoot excessive loss, polarity issues, damaged fibers, and physical-layer defects.
  • Review engineering drawings and identify routing, capacity, congestion, and accessibility issues.
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation and cabling records.
  • Coordinate installation contractors and field technicians.
  • Conduct quality inspections covering cable management, bend-radius compliance, labeling, separation, and pathway utilization.
  • Support cutover, commissioning, and connectivity validation.
  • Track installation progress, testing results, punch-list items, open issues, and remediation activities.
  • Provide technical guidance on large-scale, high-density fiber deployment strategies.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in fiber-optic cabling, data center infrastructure, network infrastructure, or a related field.
  • Strong hands-on experience with high-density fiber cabling environments.
  • Experience working in large-scale data centers, hyperscale environments, HPC clusters, or similar infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of single-mode and/or multimode fiber infrastructure.
  • Experience with fiber termination, splicing, patching, routing, labeling, and testing.
  • Knowledge of fiber polarity, connector types, patch panels, fiber distribution systems, and high-density fiber architectures.
  • Experience reading and interpreting cabling drawings, rack elevations, pathway layouts, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience coordinating large-scale field deployments involving multiple installation teams or contractors.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced construction/deployment environment with aggressive timelines.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in Colorado.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting AI/GPU cluster deployments or HPC environments.
  • Experience with hyperscale data center construction or deployment.
  • Experience supporting deployments involving 10,000+ GPUs or similarly large compute environments.
  • Experience with tens of thousands of fiber connections/runs.
  • Knowledge of 400G/800G optical connectivity and associated fiber infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with structured cabling standards and data center cabling best practices.
  • Experience with fiber certification and testing equipment.
  • BICSI, fiber-optic, or equivalent technical certifications.
